As teacher of high school students, I believe I am doing my duty as a citizen to get students worked up about politics. I am not too worried about my biases -- my collegues, who also try to interest students in the issues -- pretty much cover the political spectrum. I figure that a student's habit of following the issues will far outlast any momentary unfair effect that we might have on a student's views. However, as Champas Socialist impli

Just another stupid sidehow to distract us from the boring issues. It's fun to bait every conservative politician and call them ignorant and stupid. It's fun to bait liberal candidates' wives for not being able to find the exactly correct feminist and mainstream image simultaneously. Then, when these people finally make a gaffe in exasperation, the field day really begins, and we listen to the tapes over and over, wallowing in it all. It is

am refuting the idea that international cooperation brings safety. Nazi Germany is the classic example of how pacifist diplomacy made a bad situation worse. Those who believe in war always come back to that example, and for good reason -- that it is an exception. However, my point is not to disagree with you,

Are you talking about the one John Kerry was on when he announced his candidacy? Every appearance of this kind, by all candidates of all parties -- but your response says it all. When an opponent candidate does this kind of thing, opponents can respond with line liners and one-upmanship, but no real argument, a

I find him manipulative and playing up the dumb aspect. Yes, I read one place that Bush lost an election early in his career to somebody who out "good-old-boyed" him and cast him as an elitist. Thus, he has made it a point to never allow that to happen again. My larger point, though, is that this

How about widespread conservative criticism of President Clinton during the war in the Balkans? Was that traitorous and un-American? The trouble with your point is that it assumes that our form of government is not democratic, and that our leaders are beyond question. Admittedly, there are advantages to that kind of government, particularly in wartime, since policy disagreements at home can encou

After reading all the commentary, I decided to watch Farenheit 911 again so as to allow me a chance to reflect more deeply. Partisan politics aside, what does this movie signify? Simply put, this movie is political discourse in screen format, nothing more and nothing less. The movie basically breaks down into two segments, each aligned with the expectations of a television audience. The first contrasts the investigation of the 9/11 criminal

President Bush, who is slowly but surely declining in popularity ( currently at 42%). Edwards on the ticket should give Kerry a bump. In mid-June Kerry had about an 8-point lead over Bush, I'm far from sure about your numbers. The following site seems like a good source: <a href="http://www.race2004.ne

his hypocritical and condescending attitude towards Americans as a whole. I guess I never felt this any more from Moore than I did from Limbaugh, Savage, or the Bushies... And I object to it in all these cases.

So, what you're saying is that Moore is the Bush of the left, and that people who respect and defend Moore are no more open-minded or objective than those who do the same for Bush and that they're left-wing propogandists while those who remain silent on criticizing Limbaugh and others are right-wing ones? I'll agree with that.</T

it's tedious and time consuming to actually put togther a good fisking or debunking of a crackpot assertion. Draginol, I'm sorry that you find arguing the issues tedious, and that your "argument" turns mainly on calling the man a crackpot and those that believe him dumb. But I understand, because I have to figh

Moore is little more than just some ranting left wing idealogue who has managed to get famous. There's a zillion conspriacy nuts just like him out there. It's like they've elected him king of the loonies to spread his nastiness around. How incredibly unfair of the left wing, to counter Rush, et al with Farenheit

Considering the endless right wing talk radio, I find it a hoot that all of a sudden conservatives are outraged about this movie. Where was your outrage over Rush's propaganda? In our country, there is plenty of exposure for charasmatic, articulate expression of right wing views, and, until recently, there was very little of this for the left wing. Seems to me that Moore is a healthy development for our democracy, stirring up interest in the

The only way Bush wins is if we get another 9/11, which may very well happen again, maybe around October or maybe on September 11. Which is one reason I am worried... not about our election but about our safety. I strongly suspect that bin Laden would much prefer to see Bush win. It serves the purposes of the m
