A whole day has passed without a patch?!? I can't believe it! StarDock sucks! GalCiv is nothing more than abandonware! (This MOO3 moment was brought to you by a satisfied GalCiv customer) heh. :D

At Frogboy's prompting, I did a little more testing on the diplomacy. Here are the parameters of the game: Tiny map, Habitable planets rare, all AI players set to Intelligent. Gametime is March, 2179 (turn 15) In particular, I wanted to find the AI as soon as possible and try to eliminate the variable of rush-building colony ships. I researched Comm Theory and Universal Translator and tried to time it with my first AI encounter. I encountered the Torians and planted my

Midnightsun, well I imagine that Brad (or someone) didn't consider this possibility when he was changing the update code to trigger off of the slider updates. And since he was just in there, he probably knows exactly what to change. As a programmer, I can tell you that this happens a lot more than is let on :p Most likely, the programmer was doing a Homeric DOH! as soon as he heard about this problem. ;)

I was trading with the Torians. Mind you, this is just one example. I mentioned it because it was VERY early in the game and so it was a simpler example. As far as the different races evaluating techs differently, I haven't seen this yet. When I get a new tech, I will now typically run it by each of the races before deciding who to deal with first. Every tech I've tried gets the same offer from each race. However, that's just a sample of 5-7 techs so it could be that it was a biased sam

No, the AI is not playing smart. It's playing hard to get with the player. The very fact that someone couldn't get the AI to take an even cash-for-cash deal makes this as obvious as the nose on your face. I dunno; maybe you have a small nose. I offered Comm Theory, Universal Theory AND 600+BC before it would say "yes". For something as easy to get as Defense Theory? gimme a break. Now imagine if the AIs did this to each other. There would be no trades. Why? Because they would b

dearmad- you know, for someone with the 'diplomat' title on this forum, you are pretty damn patronizing. I have a feeling that maybe you are a little too full of yourself. -chuckle- I play tiny maps specifically for short games, not to take advantage of the AI. The problem I am seeing in GalCiv is the exact same problem I've seen in every 4X game I played since Civ1 that allowed you to trade techs. The AI is essentially being given a trade advantage to compens

"kindly play the game more. diplomacy is already too easy for something like this to be toned down." wtf kind of ignorant logic is that? Since diplomacy is "too easy", that justifies stacking the deck in favor of the AI? One of the key selling points of this game for me was that the AI was so smart that it didn't need any advantages to compete with the human player. Now that we see that it does get an advantage, you think it's OK because diplomacy is "too easy" Well ma

"We try to rip the AI off all the time... yet we're upset that GalCiv has an AI that tries to do the same to us?" And so what is the point of having an "incredible" diplomatic advantage? I'm fairly certain that the AIs are trading evenly with each other because they all seem to have the same techs. On a tiny map where you quickly get in contact with all 5 races, this is easy to see.

Vigo, I agree. The dichotomy between what my diplomatic ability was purported to be and what trades were offered is my main complaint. However, if Defense Theory is so easy to get, then why would it be valued so greatly? And, honestly, Universal Translator is far more valuable because it allows the AI to immediately start trading with other races. The cash-for-cash inequity mentioned makes obvious the inherent advantage given to the AI on the diplomatic screen.

The AI is certainly getting an unfair deal every time I play. For example, in my latest game I'm a few turns into the game and I just researched Universal Translator. So I talk to the Torians and in order to get "Defense Theory", I have to give them "Communications Theory", "Universal Translator" AND... over 600 in BC to get the deal "green". That's more than half of my treasury to even a deal that is already very lopsided in their favor! If I try to do a "yellow" deal

I was moving the money slider for the Aeceans (the last of the 5 civs I was selling techs to that turn) and.... zzzt. The game crashed. No error, just back to the desktop. I'm running a 2.2GHz Pentium IV with a GE-Force4, 512 Mb Ram and Windows XP Professional. Oh, and I'm running the latest patch. ~SDC~

Frogboy, I saw another suggested for unused production: increased morale (from workers getting more leisure time). Maybe that's a good way to deal with #2? With regards to #3, your solution would not prevent the mindless binary search algorithm of finding the max dollars needed to remain green with an "automatic acceptance". This is a real mind-numbing chore that the AI does not have to endure! I agree that once a deal gets into the yellow, the players should use trial &

Here are a few things needed to get rid of some unnecessary tedium: --- a list of uncolonized planets, sorted by quality. Now where was I going to send this colony ship? Right now, I have to hunt through every star system one by one, unless there's a better way I don't know about --- capitalism. You know, that old Civ2 enhancement that converted unused production into cash? Or how about a MOO1 'reserve', where unused production goes into an imperial slush fund? Maybe I don't

When I am displaying the list of planets to the right of the screen, there is a scroll bar to the right of the list once I reach a certain number of planets. When I slide the mouse over to the scroll bar, it is very easy to "overshoot" it and hit the right frame of the program window. When this happens, the galaxy map starts scrolling to the right, losing my place. Very annoying! ~SDC~
