I have a question: For all of the past games I've been playing, I have found that I am in alliances with other nations that I never willingly entered into. Are alliances intended to be cultural kind of things, like one of those understood relationships like that between North America and Great Brittain? Is it where you don't have much choice in it? Or is it busted and you actually are supposed to enter into formal alliances? How this works is not quite clear.
Here's an opportunity for creating an event. Say the Survey Ship gets lost from your control and has to crash land on some remote barely habitable or whatever world it can reach. Later on in the game, the tiny lost colony shows up and its people claim descent from the original crew or something...
When a foreign power attacks one of my trading partners, it would be nice to have the diplomatic option of asking the aggressor to make peace with the race they are at war with, hopefully using your influence over them. After all, what good is it for if you can't do such a thing? I could find no such option. After several games, I was wanting to do this.
