If you look at the facts college is indeed many times more expensive now than it was when our parents or grandparents attended. The tuition at the school I attended has gone up over 150% in the ten years since I graduated. At that rate when I have kids it will likely cost what would have been a year in the ivy league for me to send my kids for a year of a state school.
