I don't use widget applications that much. I just don't find I have uses for them very often, though I do use an occassional widget now and then. But being the geek that I am, I like to check out the options out there. I have DesktopX (of course), Yahoo! widget engine (I still call in Konfabulator), Kapsules, dotWidget, and have had Samurize installed.
A while back there was another I tried out that seemed pretty decent. If I recall correctly it was called EZpod (or something like that). I pretty much forgot all about it, but apparently it has been updated, renamed to podXP, and version 1.1 was recently released.
I have no idea if it is very open for users creating their own 'pods', but it does come with a pretty decent set of prefabbed pods, and they all look pretty decent.
All in all, a pretty decent little application, and certainly worth checking out. Here is my desk, with the pods I like running (though far too cluttered for everyday use, this is just to show some of the nicer pods):

Linky, linky
Check it out!
