To Serve Or not to Serve?

A seemingly simple choice:

There are three in my current office who could serve in an intelligence capacity: Skyler, Kenny, Robert. Each has the aptitude necessary for intelligence work.. should I push them? God, I hate being away from the national need.

Ask yourself if the government would be more likely to leverage their skills or mire them in beaurocratic busy work.

Depending on the intelligence capacity.... I have field operative leanings which means a select number are able to handle the job diversity, volatility and inward seclusion for the greater good. On the other hand if there many intelligence aspects that could use their talents and be rewarding service.

I think "push" is the wrong way to go. Telling them about your experiences (good and bad) and letting them know about what's available out there should be enough. You would be doing your duty, so to speak, and still leaving the full choice up to them.

If they show a leaning towards it, I'm sure you could help mentor them on their way in...

I totally agree with pseudosoldier on that. I did a lot of "recruiting" while I was in the Army National Guard. Was I out trying to actively bring new bodies into the unit? NOPE. I just told people that I knew what the deal was. I told them what the benefits were, told them what the pitfalls were, and let them make their own decisions. A few signed up, others didn't.

I'll just echo what has already been said. If you think they would be great assets to the U.S. military, let them know what you think and why. The rest is up to them.

All to often we get caught up in the idea that the military is the only way a person can serve their country. To me, everyone doing their best in an honest occupation is serving their country. Of course, some do that better than others, but that's a different topic. ;~D

So any of your three proteges have any actual desire to be intel people?

I'll second that. My novel to some extent describes the essential part the home front played in WWII.

Tell them to go green to gold

They'd be required to first go green. Did you mean OCS/direct commissioning? I think if grey says they have Intelligence potential, he's probably talking non-Officer roles.

Just tell them that if anything they can always be cooks like Steven Segal.

My take is that it depends. It isn't always the case that someone who can do something should do something. However, I do think they need to know that it is something they can reach for, and it is generally good to help people grow as long as they are willing.

However, i'm sure you know what to do and what you will do...
