Bush Administration Stopped Mine Safety Improvements

The Acting director of Mine Safety testified before Congress that in December 2001 the Bush Administration stopped improved mine safety changes that were proposed at the end of the Clinton Administration. He was unable to provide an answer as to why things like communications and location systems were stopped. He was also unable to answer why mine safety regulations were not enforced against several mine operators one of which was similar to the one that caused the mine fire in a conveyer belt.

From what I have read the problem in the two recent mine accidents were because they weren't following the safety standards we already have. Perhaps it would be more productive to devote resources to enforcement than inventing new laws when the old ones don't work?

The questions were directed to David Dye, Acting Asst. Sec of Labor for mine safety about WHY proposed new regulations that would have required GPS and individual communications that were proposed near the end of the Clinton Administration were terminated in December 2001 by the Bush Administration. It has nothing to do with the % of mine accidents and yes the Governor of one state is taking action. The question is WHY would the Bush Administration have stopped a proposal that would have helped locate the miners in the recent accidents? Now Bush and others are saying we must see what other safety steps can be taken. This step of being able to locate miners to expedite their rescue would have been in place had the Bush Administration moved forward with the new regulation that Clinton proposed! It is just one small consequence of the overall philosophy of Bush and the conservatives of NOT IMPOPSIONG REGULATIONS on Business!

Col, I believe that what MM tried to say was that these accidents have been prevented in the first place if the rules would have been followed. But the rules should have been enforced by those in charge, if anyone is responisble it's them. Not necesarily Bush.

I do, however, agree that things like GPS and special radios should be a must. So I give you half of your argument Col. Although I'm sure you still gonna ignore me.
