French Newspaper Reprints Controversial Cartoons

Are you sure France is the best country in which to stir up more racial unrest?

In a stunning decision, the French have decided to stir up racial and ethnic controversy. As if they hadn't suffered enough from the recent riots, a French newspaper has decided that in the name of free speech, they would reprint the controversial, Muslim-bashing cartoons that plagued a Danish newspaper.

A French newspaper has published Danish cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed that have stirred outrage in the Muslim world. France-Soir newspaper says it is simply defending freedom of expression.

France-Soir plastered its own cartoon on its front page - spoofing not only the prophet Mohammed, but also Buddha, Jehovah and Jesus. The French newspaper wrote in a large headline, "Yes, one has the right to make fun of God."

Inside its pages, the newspaper ran all of the controversial cartoons of Mohammed that appeared in a Danish daily in September.

In an editorial, France-Soir defended its action as defending freedom of expression and reporting on a major subject of controversy.

It argued in an editorial that the Danish cartoons had absolutely no racial intention, no will to denigrate a community as such. France-Soir said some of the cartoons were funny, others less so. The newspaper said it simply wanted to publish them so the public could see for themselves.

But Dalil Boubakeur, head of the Paris Mosque, criticized the newspaper for publishing the cartoons.

Mr. Boubakeur said the cartoons hurt the feelings of Muslims. They act as provocations. "Liberty is liberty," he said, "but this is about people's sensitivities."

The Danish cartoons have stirred similar expressions of outrage around the Arab world. Arab ministers last month urged Denmark to punish the newspaper that published them. And while Denmark's prime minister refused to do so, citing again the liberty of expression, the Danish newspaper apologized for offending Muslims with the cartoons.

Bad form, France-Soir newspaper... haven't you had enough racial rioting and threats of violence? You apparently didn't learn Denmark's lesson. Should we let in the rioters now, or make them wait outside?

It's about freedom and the fact that Islam wants to impose its values on everyone else. It isn't about the "Disrespectful" way that Muhhamed was depicted, Syria and those offended are upset because it is against Islamic law to depict him at all.

The French should be able to print what they want. France is stuffed full of PC types who want to rob their nation of the ability to express themselves. I was actually happily surprised that the Frence would take such a bold step, especially when it is so counter to their fascist streak. I hope they'll allow more expression, and reject their PC state eventually.

I posted my article about it already, and I am not surprised to find that many differ. I think it is sad when we coddle nations who issue death threats for artists and authors for what they produce.

Thanks, Baker. I did not look at your article because I didn't recognize your article's subject from the title. I apologize and I'm reassured to see that we're not really taking the same slant. My point is that for a nation that just came off devastating series of riots throughout its cities, the last thing they should want to do is foment more outrage and violence.

heh, no reason to apologize. I wouldn't be bothered if every blogger wrote their opinion of it. Really, I think adnauseum wrote about it first here.

It wouldn't surprise me if the cartoons aren't a reaction to those riots in a way. The French people have to feel like they are living with a loaded gun pointed at them; that if they say or do the wrong thing that their cars are going to get burned.

No one should live like that, and if France is to have a large Muslim population, they should be very vocal about the fact that they won't have Islamic practices imposed on them. At the same time they shouldn't be telling Islamic women what they can wear, either.

France is not anti-islam.  They hate everyone!  Remember their "Heil Pope" crap?

Okay the riots aren't IN FRANCE, but they sure are happening!

Nice going newspapers: stir up some hatred all in the name of self-aggrandizement and selling a few more copies.

Yes, much better to bow to Islamic bullying and not publish what you want. Again, go back and see what started this. These cartoons are a response to an earlier demand by Muslims that no one publish images of the Prophet of Allah. Hey, the next time they demand we release prisoners or they'll behead someone, we should do that, too, right? We should build our own lives around the barbarity of others, shouldn't we?

It isn't self-aggrandizing to do what you are allowed to do when someone is trying to deny you the right. If someone predicted you'd act like an idiot when they told a joke about your momma, would you give them the satisfaction? Muslims should have taken the "high road" and respected other people's rights. I personally don't think modern Islam in the Middle East, and in many other places, is capable of it.

This isn't much different than the riots over the Rodney King verdict. The newspapers allowed Islam to be portrayed as violent, and they have done their best to prove the portrayal as accurate.
