A comment on the State of the Union speech....

Dem's cheering about failure to pass Social Security Reform should be embarrassing

I really don't want to comment on much of the State of the Union speech, but I do want to say Hillary and her friends that led the cheers about the failure to pass any social security reform should be highly embarrassing to any and every Democrat and all other red-blooded U.S. citizens.

The Democrats didn't just sit on their hands during that part of the speech. No, they got up and started cheering, hooting and hollering, led by Hillary and her friends. They were oh so proud of their successful efforts to help keep the bankrupt and corrupt social security program in it's same damaged condition for the forseeable future.

We could have, and should have, taken advantage of the Presidents leadership on the highly volatile social security issue. Instead Democrats demagogued the issue to death, thanks to their friends among the AARP, the NEA, and many other unions and others. Instead of offering up alternatives, they let the President waste political capital (and sat back and watched with glee) and helped us move another year closer to the time when more goes out of the social security system than could possibly come in.

The Democrats are sure that they will fix the problem with a quick fix 'tweak' that will raise taxes on someone, at least they hope that will be the case. They could have proposed a big raise in the cap on wages that are subject to social security contributions. That is something that some Republicans actually did float as a potential part of a bigger fix. Instead, again, the Democrats sat back and delayed and obstructred, and confused the issue.

For that, Democrats should be embarrased and ashamed of themselves. Their behavior on the topic during the State of the Union speech was reprehensible. I would hope that the electorate would call them on it, but alas our electorate has short memories, and typically will have moved well beyond the topic when the next election cycle comes around.

Just my $.02, before The Better Way comes along to tax that (and all the rest of my income and money) away from me....

It boggles the mind. I think they really see themselves as working "defense", like a football team. To them, I suppose the minority isn't there to do anything proactive, only to block anything attempted by the majority.

I hope they don't think it makes them look good to the average American. After the 100th time you ask, "What is the Democratic plan" and the answer is always "They don't have one, they are just opposing the Republican plan"... well, you begin to see what they are all about.

I guess the skanky senator is too riddled with STDs to remember that when her hubby was in office she recognized that Social Security was in trouble.

Their behavior was an embarrassment and indicative of the party's confusion. Also, the Democratic Response was nothing more then a feeble attempt at beginning a campaign.

I could be wrong, and may have blotted it out of my memory, but I really don't recall that much open jeering about her and her husband's failure to pass the Health Care package during Bubba's first term. It was certainly on par with Bush's social security privatization for title of biggest proposed and failed reforms.

True, and wasn't it Miss Hillary who Prs. Clinton asked to head that fiasco?

All I know is that Tim Kaine has promised 'there's a better way.' Heck, he promised that so many times, and stumbled through his speech so badly, it seemed that I must have been watching something completely different than what the commentators on FOX were seeing. His message was fine I guess, but his delivery was poor and distracting, and far too repetitive. I know he and his friends wanted to hammer home the 'there's a better way' message, but it was very reminiscent of Al Gore's "lock box" that was so fabulously lampooned by Saturday Night Live. Now I'm actually hoping that SNL would pick up the ball and run with it on both the State of the Union speech and Kaine's response

My mother is very conservative.  The last democrat she even liked was JFK (she hated Johnson and blamed him for the assassination).  Yet, on Social Security, she is dead set against reform.  She is not stupid.  She graduated at the top of her class from a Catholic HS no less.

And as you can guess, she is retired.  I just dont get her attitude.  I have tried to talk to her about it, but she is very obstinant.  That is where the jerks on the left get their stupidity from I guess.

I am not counting on SS when I retire.  I know it will not be around for my kids.

Strange, no left responses to this article. It must be a first for me to not see one. Wonder why?

I guess it doesn't matter that the majority of citizens opposed Bush's Social Security plan also, eh? plan.Link

but the question arises: What have the democrats proposed as a solution to fix the problem?

We can sit here and yell at each other all day long about how Bush's proposal sucked....while still the democrats STILL have not offered anything.

The Democrats' grab-assing and back-slapping about their defeating Bush's proposal may have been held in a bit higher esteem if they actaully got off their sorry asses and tried to fix something. But instead, all they want to do is obstruct....

Personally, it sickens me. Especially after hearing the moron talk after the speech....the democrats are leading the way in defeating corruption??? hahahahahahahahahaha....yeah, whatever....

I'm guessing that as usual you have nothing of substance to bring to any conversation. I tried to edit it, but it wouldn't let me at the time.

Yeah, it's a shame they can't accomplish anything, considering they have the minority and everything they propose goes right through with no obstruction from the GOP. Do you even know how Congress works?

Slow back down a second. Read your own words, especially the highlighted part.

You just hit the nail right on the head, and explained to yourself and the world where the frustration lies here.

There have been NO proposals from the left, minority, liberals, Democrats or whatever label wishes to be applied.

I'm reminded of the answer that Dear Abby/ Ann Landers/ etc. gives to the men that want to know why they can't get a date with someone who describe in their letter that they've never asked, or the women that want to know why they can't find a good man. Because they never try, and always assume the answer is going to be no, or always no when asked.

If the Democrats have a plan that they believe '[ There ] is a better way" than they must step up to the plate and take a swing. You can't hit a homerun unless you are swinging. You can't get the free pass unless you take a trip up to bat, etc. The Democrats aren't even trying. They are assuming that they answer is no (because they are used to using that answer themselves) and then complaining because no one will involve them in the dialogue.

For the record, some Democrats actually did start to open discussion and dialogue with the President and almost immediately they are scolded by Democratic leadership and virtually shunned by the own party and supporters. Ask Kwesi Mfume, former head of the NAACP. He started to open a dialogue with the Republicans and was reminding his fellow NAACP members that failing to do so would doom them to continued failure because they are taken for granted by the Democrats. As soon as he started doing that, Julian Bond and company smacked him back down and started denying that he had any right to speak on behalf of the NAACP.

If Democrats have an idea -- any idea -- on any problem that faces this country, then damn it, throw it out there. If it's good, it'll catch fire quickly and become unstoppable. Unfortunately the Democrats are so afraid of getting burned that instead they are bidign their time until they can hopefully (in their minds) retake the Senate, House and/or White House and then cry more because they need control of the remaining branches to get their goals accomplished. At least that is what is obviously going to happen if they get the chance.

And I wasn't referring specifically to Social Security. They have not to my knowledge, offered an alternative as of yet.

Very much so.  But when their handlers are saying to not fix it is the way to go, then they can obstruct, even when a majority IN congress want to fix it.  It is a shame YOU dont realize how congress works.

I can see the point of criticizing the Democrats for cheering about the non-passage of SS reform. However, now the Democrats are being falsely criticized for things realted to the SOTU that are not even true.

Rush Limbaugh;

LIMBAUGH: America stands and cheers; Democrats sit down. This is another -- this just nailed them, folks. Democrats can't bring themselves to applaud the fact that there are even fewer abortions taking place and that teen pregnancy's down.

LIMBAUGH: The Democrats sat on their rear ends. They didn't -- I mean, folks, I mean, occasionally, well, [Sen.] Ben Nelson [D] would stand up now and then, from Nebraska. There'd be a couple of them like a jack-in-the-box, stand up real quick and then sit right back down. But they couldn't even -- because abortion is the sacrament to the religion of feminism, and the feminists are not going to put up with the Democrats standing up and cheering that number.

LIMBAUGH: They have become my parodies. They're, they're not going to realize they goofed up. They're, they're sitting around all day thinking they scored big home runs last night with these antics of theirs -- of sitting down during a discussion of victory -- of sitting down during a discussion of freedom -- of sitting down during a discussion of cultural improvements like fewer abortions, fewer teen pregnancies. They sit down on that.

If you watch clips of the speech you will see that no one was standing while applauding after Bush talked about Abortions declinging. The Democrats were clapping right along with the Republicans, but no one stood up.

Katie Couric;

COURIC: Well, you could see it, if you just watched the scene, Matt. I mean, the chamber erupted in applause 60 times, but during most of those times, Democrats sat on their hands. The only moment the Democrats really applauded was when the president talked about his failed plan to reform Social Security. We'll have a complete wrap-up of the speech, and as we mentioned, we'll talk with Senator John Kerry [D-MA], as well as NBC's Tom Brokaw and Tim Russert.

This is just flat out not true also. I get so tired of the "conservative media bias"!

Instead of offering up alternatives, such as Gore's SS+ and was mercilessly criticized. I myself have offered numerous alternatives and JU blew me away.
