Looks Like Some Canadians are going to be Disappointed

For 12 years, the Liberals have ruled Canada.  A lifetime for some.  But now that appears to be ending.  Which is fine.  I remember when the old Conservatives ruled it (after all it was only 12 years ago).

But some of our JU cannucks are whittling nails to the nubs fretting over it.  To them I offer this olive Branch.  Dont sweat it!  Us here in the lower continent weathered Clinton for 8 years!  If we can do it, so can you!

So Chin up!  And welcome to reality.  No one stays in power for ever!  Just ask Saddam! {Grin}

No worries here. I've voted NDP ever since I started voting. It now looks like the Conservative party will win a minority government. Which means that they will need the support of either the Liberal party or my NDP to get anything passed in the House of Commons. Which also means that they're going to have to bend on a lot of their platform. And of course, if they stray too far to the right the Liberal party and the NDP will join together to do to them what they did to the Liberals and bring about a vote of non-confidence in the House. Then it's back to the polls again.

I was pretty displeased with my voting this year. Even though I felt it had to be done, there are going to be some pretty upsetting changes happening if Harper gets in.

You got a weird government!  The NDP is left of the Liberals.  Why would they team up with the Conservatives?  It would seem they would team up with the Liberals and outvote the conservatives.

Ok for you I Guess!

So some say.  But in reality, I doubt much will change.  Just the face on the news.  At least that appears to be the lesson down here.

Dang it, Guy... I was literally getting my stuff together for a post on the Canadian election when I saw you had posted yours. That's twice in two days... (first one included testicules...)

I want to learn more about Canadian politics, so I will actually be watching the poll returns tonight (in passing). Should make for an interesting North American political climate for the next several years.

Of course, outspoken Canadian libs like Stephen Page (BNL) are still lamenting the Pierre Trudeau years (see "Wilted Rose" on his Vanity Project CD).

Yeah, it's strange. Of course, you're right, it's not probable that the NDP would join forces with the Conservatives but anything is possible. I can imagine a couple of areas where the NDP might join with the Consevatives in a vote, if for nothing else than to thumb their noses at the Liberals.

But most likely, we will see the Conservatives and Liberals voting together on most things. Which means that the Conservatives will be compromising on many things with the Liberals. In other words, business as usual.

I did intend on keeping everyone up to date on the polls as they closed across Canada. However, The Canada Elections Act states the following:

Prohibition – premature transmission of results

329. No person shall transmit the result or purported result of the vote in an electoral district to the public in another electoral district before the close of all of the polling stations in that other electoral district.

Since other Canadians in other electoral districts in other time zones across Canada frequent Joeuser, (latour is the first one that comes to mind), I'm not going to be able to say a thing. At least not until the ban is lifted. (10pm EST).

Even though I am not a fan of Harper I think the change is healthy. It provides closure over the gomery inquiry, it forces a reconstruction of the liberal base (which is not a bad thing), and does make some efforts at addressing west vs east concerns. Whether Harper sticks to his promises is another discussion!

I agree with Ubob, if Harper crosses a certain line the minority rule he has is toast.

I just hope the Liberals are dumb enough to make Michael Ignatieff party leader. That should send progressive Canadains to the NDP in droves.
