What do you want to use web hosting for? Specifically?

My hosting is about $20 a year, and I've never had any complaints. It's probably not the best out there if you want to do all sorts of crazy techno stuff, but it's good enough for me.

PS: If you end up getting this, say Thinkbulb.com referred you.

Wow, Adamness,

I use Bravenet but seems like this a way cheaper. I will have to check out how much mb I get and bandwith t compare them, haven't done that yet

Free web hosting, you could get an account with tripod. I used that for my fantasy teams, and keeping them all up to date on the scores and what not. I liked the way you could design the page you wanted without too many limitations. Now I use it for my childs Karate team and what they've been up to. Not bad for personal web sites. I wouldn't recommend it for commerical pages though, but, that's just my opinion

Yeah, those free hosting plans aren't that great. I have 50MB of space, and for most people (and me), that is plenty. My site looks pretty complete (to me at least) and the entire thing is less than 10MB.

I have 2GB of bandwidth, which should also be plenty. Unlimited subdomains, email accounts, and ftp accounts and cgi/perl support. Can't ask for much more.

It's basically some college chick in California who has a server in one of those big server warehouses, which is why it's so much cheaper than those big flashy hosting sites. She must make a ton of money.

For as much as I like my host, I should also say to look into Thinkhost.com. Link They are pretty cool. All their servers and offices run off of solar or wind power. They're pretty cheap as well. I was thinking of switching to them, but I already paid through October.

I use Dreamhost. They have a special deal where you can get one year for about $9. http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?sduid=25026&t=151376

Doesn't your ISP offer you free web space with your account?

I think it depends on what your actually trying to do with your website, how many people will be on it, how much interaction you want, and so forth.

If its a profesional site, then spending money is the only real way of doing it. How much is what will be in question. If it is a personal site, then it depends on how much interaction you will have on your site, and so forth that will determain whether or not you will be able to have a free site or have to pay for hosting.

There are, however, plenty of open source tools to use to control your website. Joomla is one, LifeType is another. WordPress just got a major update nd can basically be a whole site is you want it to be.

Ok, Island Dog, I subscribed to Dreamhost I love the fact that I got it for $9.94 for a full year I"m also impressed with the amount of bandwith and gb usage you get. Way much than I did with bravenet. I was paying $8.95 per month with BN, but, now I don't have to worry about another payment till 1/07 WoooHooo, Very happy here.

Only question I have is? Now, do I just open up my ftp and upload my web page from bravenet to dreamhost? They said I was responsible for the transfer...kinda lost as to what to do...any help?

They should provide the server addresses you need to upload. Usually there are two. Just put them into the ftp options. I think they usually look like ns1.website.com. or something like that.

I have had no problems with Dreamhost and they continually upgrade thier bandwidth and storage.  Every year around Christmas they have big specials like this one, so when it's time to renew there should be another offer.

They will send you e-mails that have your ftp addresses, or go into your control panel and find it there.

Yeah, Adamness, I did get that e-mail. Just wondering if I did it through my ftp program or sign onto bravenet and do it that way...
