Copying Ship Designs

Copying and Modifying Ship Designs

I like creating short, medium, and long range versions (varying in price) of the standard ship designs. However, each time I create a new design I need to start from scratch. It would be nice if I could copy the standard colony ship (with all its' added eye candy) and then just change the engines and life support. This is basically what happens when we upgrade a ship design. So how about adding a COPY button next to the NEW button.

Seconded: It would be really nice to be able to duplicate a design

Hmmm...I thought about something similar to this but the difference is that I want only to save hull designs, with added eye candy and none of the working modules, to the hull lists for the various races.

I have to agree with this idea 100%.

Ship design really needs the following two things:
1-ability to save a design at any point during its creation (with the ability to load it and continue modification from there)
2-ability to copy any design, creating a new variant

I feel I am missing some ability to compare designs, often I like to see if it is worth an upgrade from time to time as my tech evolves, but there aren't really any good tools to compare design benefits, other than hovering over component by component choices (by the way the pop up's there are borked arent they?).

Yeah, i agree. its really annoying having to restart a design when you have to stop. some of the ready made designs are great and its a shame that you can't add more. They should really add this in before its released or add in into an update or mod.

So it's not possible to change an existing design and save it under a different name?

Nope! I like to create short, medium, and long range variants of the colony, constructor, and freighter ships with the short range being the cheapest and long range the most expensive. At least everytime I make an advance in engines or life support, I can upgrade these variants but creating the initial designs is a pain!

I just thought about this idea also -- good thing I searched the forums first. I think this would be an excellent idea. Currently I create base designs and manually copying the files by alt-tabbing out of the game. I'd like to put in my vote for this feature as well.
