The AMD FX-60

The AMD FX-60 is due out on January 10, 2006.

It's dual cores that clock at 2.6GHz. Preliminary reports are that it will be a decent overclocker, early samples went to almost 3GHz on air, with little or no tweaking. If you couple it with the new NVidia 7800/512 cards, you will be easily able to break the 15K barrier in 3DMark05.

So, this will be the gamer chip of choice for some time to come.

If AMD follows form, it will be make a slight power increase over the single core, 110w vs 95, and the dual 2.6's will be out early next year in non-FX guise at a 95W power level.

What are you thinking? I think you will love the progress.

Gotta love the competition. Without AMD in the game we’d be eagerly waiting to shell out $1200 for the delayed Christmas release of the new P4. Thank you Intel may I have another.

Still think we’d have a much better OS right now if the DOD had split up MS.

All the DOJ could have done, if even, would have been to allow for more competition.

But competition exists and you have dozens of operating systems to choose from. I recommend, in this order:

1. Mac OS X (wait for the Intel-based machines if you care about the architecture)

2. Solaris (like GNU/Linux but can be bought with well-supported hardware and has a little but nicer GUI)

3. GNU/Linux (I recommend Novell)

4. FreeBSD (for the real geek, also easier than the other BSD's except Mac OS)

Mac OS is of course limited to IBM, Motorola, and Intel chips. The new AMDs are not supported.

But Sun are a big AMD partner. They eagerly promote AMD and make _very nice_ AMD-based computers. If I wasn't a Mac user or had enough money (and a reason) to buy into another architecture, I'd buy a few Solaris boxen.

And GNU/Linux and FreeBSD probably support AMD processors well.

I like operating systems, there are so many to choose from. But I'm a geek.

Oh well il stick with my A64 2800+, but id like to rather see a decent 64bit os (That actually improves performance )

Some more informations about new FX-60:
  • based on 90nm Toledo core.
  • clocked at 2.6GHz (13.0 x 200MHz), Dual Core.
  • 2 x 1MB L2 cache.
  • 1.35V VCore and JH-E6 stepping.
  • the last Socket 939 processor of the Athlon 64 FX family.

The successor of FX-60 will be the FX-62 which is Socket M2 based and support Dual Channel DDR2 667.
