Bush & Congress Ignore 9/11 Warnings to protect America

Former 9/11 Committee Chairman and NJ Governor (R), Tom Kean and the Vice Chairman Lee Hamilton (D) have charged President Bush and Congress have failed to enact several strong security measures recommended by the 9/11 Commission. More then four years after 9/11 and we are not paying attention.

Hamilton said, "we believe that another attack will occur. It's not a question of if." Why is President Bush and the leadership in Congress not acting to protect America? The only major element of the 9/11 recommendations Bush and Congress acted upon from the commissions report is the creation of the National Intelligence Director.

I'll tell you what I'll do. I'll answer your question just as soon as you answer mine. Why did Bill Clinton ignore all the warnings he was given about Al-Queda attacking us in the first place.

Grassley asked for an investigation into how the FBI handled the July 2001 memo from the FBI's Phoenix field office recommending the bureau keep an eye on flight schools, obtain visa information on enrolled pilots and coordinate a nationwide investigation.

FBI Director Robert Mueller told a Senate panel last week that memo likely did not make it to high levels of the FBI or the CIA and that the agency should have made it a higher priority.

"This memo has emerged as one of the most significant and alarming warnings that the FBI had before the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001," Grassley wrote. "It is essential that there be an outside review of this matter by your office to answer all outstanding questions, ensure accountability at the FBI and reaffirm the trust of the American people."

"We should have had orange or red-type of alert in June or July of 2001" - A former FBI translator told the 9/11 commission that the bureau had detailed information well before Sept. 11, 2001, that terrorists were likely to attack the U.S. with airplanes. - A former FBI wiretap translator with top-secret security clearance, who has been called "very credible" by Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, has told Salon she recently testified to the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States that the FBI had detailed information prior to Sept. 11, 2001, that a terrorist attack involving airplanes was being plotted.

I guess the same as Bush in Aug 2001 when he got a report in Taxes that he ignored. Today Bush is the President and AFTER 9/11 he is not protecting us by ignoring many of the 9/11 commission recomendations. It is bad enough for BOTH Clinton and Bush to ignore the warnings BEFORE 9/11 but to ignore the danger the way Bush is today AFTER 9/11 is simply WRONG!

You never really answered the question and yet you still continue to place all the blame on Bush. Sure hes not the best we've had, but hows about we point fingers at all those responsible not just those we hate. Or are you saying that Clinton can be forgiven for his mistake that, in part, lead to the 9/11 events and the death of 3000 people because he made one hell of a surplus for this country. Money talks I guess.

This Blog is about the failure of Bush and Congress to follow the recomendations of the 9/11 commission. It has NOTHING to do with Clinton. It is the same story with the Bush supporters, Change The Subject or Attack the person. WHY has BUSH and CONGRESS not done all they can do to protect this nation per the 9/11 commission recomendations?

Ignored is the wrong word to use, because that clearly hasn't been the case, but I actually agree that the pace of real change has been much too slow. Too much of the wall that was erected between the FBI & the CIA, so famously heightened by 9/11 Commissioner Gorelick when she was in the DOJ, remains in place. We do a great job of making sure Grandma doesn't accidently take her nail trimmers on board an airplane, but beyond that our border security remains way too lax. Bush deserves criticism for not pushing harder, though most of what needs to be done is the job of Congress.

Cheers,
Daiwa

Failure is what Kean and Hamilton said about Bush and Congress.

I made it about Slick Willie too when I asked my question. I told you I'd answer your question about GW just as soon as you answer mine. Which you have not done as of yet.

The Bolg has NIOTHING to do with Clinton. We had not been attacked when Clinton was President. Now that we have been attacked to have Bush and Congress not protect the U S is the issue. That report is a stinging report on the failure of the GOP leadership in BOTH Congress and the White House. This country needs a BIG change in leadership in Congress and in the White House.

Then the sailors who died aboard the Cole meant how much to you? Let me refresh your memory, Colonel...
From Wikipedia:

On October 12, 2000, USS Cole came to the harbor of Aden, Yemen for a routine fuel stop. Cole completed mooring at 09:30. Refueling started at 10:30. At 11:18 local time (08:18 UTC), a small craft approached the port side of the destroyer, and an explosion occurred, putting a 40-by-40-foot (12 m-by-12 m) gash in the ship's port side. The crew fought flooding in the engineering spaces and had the damage under control by the evening. Divers inspected the hull and said the keel was not damaged.

Seventeen sailors were killed and 39 others were injured in the blast. The injured sailors were taken to the United States Army's Landstuhl Regional Medical Center near Ramstein, Germany, and later to the U.S.

The attack, organized by Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida terrorist organization, was carried out by suicide bombers Ibrahim al-Thawr and Abdullah al-Misawa.

17 dead and Clinton's watch was not attacked? Or are you just ignoring the threats?

Oh really fool? Tell that to these dead. You really should do your research before you say something dumb.

June 1996 terrorist attack on Khobar Towers near Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, that killed 19 U.S. airmen and wounded 500 more.

We were not attacked in the U S prior to 9/11 since Dec 7, 1941. My point and the point of the report is valid.
Bush and the leadership in Congress is NOT doing what is needed to protect the United States. WHY? Just provide an answer to that question.

The first Trade Towers bombing left six Americans dead on 26 Feb 93.
Link

The American Embassy bombings 8th Aug 1997, killed 80 (14 Americans) and wounded over 1,700. The last time I checked American Embassies are considered American Soil.
Link

The Iran Hostages happened on US Embassy Grounds for 444 days in 1979-1980.
Link

How often must we turn the other cheek before fighting back? I guess for you Gene, it takes 3000 lives. I personally would not like to have been one of those killed before 911. Maybe we should have done something back when they were only taking hostages.

WRONG AGAIN clueless! Would you like me to go find the laws covering our embassies? They ARE U.S. territories! Even "if" you're talking CONUS you seem to be forgetting Lee1776's example.

Now try again and do "try" to put some thought into it this time.

Don't be so hard on the guy, his hatred for Bush is so powerful it actually creates a filter when he uses google to show only what he wants to see. Too many bullets to the head if you ask me.

Hey I have a question if they are not protecting us,

1. Why have we not been attacked again then....

2. How about this:

Overall, the United States and its partners have disrupted at least ten serious al-Qaida terrorist plots since September 11--including three al-Qaida plots to attack inside the United States. We have stopped at least five more al-Qaida efforts to case targets in the United States or infiltrate operatives into our country.

10 Plots

1. The West Coast Airliner Plot: In mid-2002 the U.S. disrupted a plot to attack targets on the West Coast of the United States using hijacked airplanes. The plotters included at least one major operational planner involved in planning the events of 9/11.
2. The East Coast Airliner Plot: In mid-2003 the U.S. and a partner disrupted a plot to attack targets on the East Coast of the United States using hijacked commercial airplanes.
3. The Jose Padilla Plot: In May 2002 the U.S. disrupted a plot that involved blowing up apartment buildings in the United States. One of the plotters, Jose Padilla, also discussed the possibility of using a "dirty bomb" in the U.S.
4. The 2004 UK Urban Targets Plot: In mid-2004 the U.S. and partners disrupted a plot that involved urban targets in the United Kingdom. These plots involved using explosives against a variety of sites.
5. The 2003 Karachi Plot: In the Spring of 2003 the U.S. and a partner disrupted a plot to attack Westerners at several targets in Karachi, Pakistan.
6. The Heathrow Airport Plot: In 2003 the U.S. and several partners disrupted a plot to attack Heathrow Airport using hijacked commercial airliners. The planning for this attack was undertaken by a major 9/11 operational figure.
7. The 2004 UK Plot: In the Spring of 2004 the U.S. and partners, using a combination of law enforcement and intelligence resources, disrupted a plot to conduct large-scale bombings in the UK.
8. The 2002 Arabian Gulf Shipping Plot: In late 2002 and 2003 the U.S. and a partner nation disrupted a plot by al-Qa'ida operatives to attack ships in the Arabian Gulf.
9. The 2002 Straits of Hormuz Plot: In 2002 the U.S. and partners disrupted a plot to attack ships transiting the Straits of Hormuz.
10. The 2003 Tourist Site Plot: In 2003 the U.S. and a partner nation disrupted a plot to attack a tourist site outside the United States.

5 Casings and Infiltrations

1. The U.S. Government & Tourist Sites Tasking: In 2003 and 2004, an individual was tasked by al-Qa'ida to case important U.S. Government and tourist targets within the United States.
2. The Gas Station Tasking: In approximately 2003, an individual was tasked to collect targeting information on U.S. gas stations and their support mechanisms on behalf of a senior al-Qa'ida planner.
3. Iyman Faris & the Brooklyn Bridge: In 2003, and in conjunction with a partner nation, the U.S. government arrested and prosecuted Iyman Faris, who was exploring the destruction of the Brooklyn Bridge in New York. Faris ultimately pleaded guilty to providing material support to al-Qa'ida and is now in a federal correctional institution.
4. 2001 Tasking: In 2001, al-Qa'ida sent an individual to facilitate post-September 11 attacks in the U.S. U.S. law enforcement authorities arrested the individual.
5. 2003 Tasking: In 2003, an individual was tasked by an al-Qa'ida leader to conduct reconnaissance on populated areas in the U.S.

Hmmm sounds like they are at least doing something to protect us..
