All shortcuts locked to default icon

Cannot change shortcut icons back to program icons

I have been customizing my icons, mostly getting attractive icons for all of my major applications. Just last night I rebooted and all of my start menu shortcuts (*.lnk) had changed to the default file icon.

I was annoyed but thought I could just go through and change them. When I right click on one (In Windows Explorer) to edit the properties, then click Change Icon, no matter what icon I select, it does not change the icon of the shortcut. Once I select an icon, it changes on the Shortcut tab preview, but on the General tab and in Explorer it does not change.

I have tried Rebuilding the icon cache and repairing the icons and nothing has helped.

Thanks for any help!

I just found a fic to this problem.

http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm

The page lists a number of registry files which can repair problems with specific extensions. I figured the problem was in the registry, and searched my registry for .lnk, but did not see anything blatantly wrong.

Check the page if you're having trouble with icons misbehaving!
