Here's another competition.

Don't cheat--off your bat!

http://robcairo.tblog.com
I love Americana and I have an extensive library of books, although I have never been to the US. Here's a quiz on Presidents. Try to answer off the bat. Most are easy
but I've tried to throw in one or two puzzlers:
All the answers apply to the 20th Century only!
* Which President, other than JFK and Ike, was decorated for service in WW2?
* Which two presidents were assassinated in the twentieth Century?
* How many presidents were Generals before taking up office? (20th Century only).
* Which President was never elected by popular vote?
* Which two Presidents were born with different surnames?
* Which President advised Senator Joseph Mc Carthy in the early fifties?
* Which President sought advise from advisors and Senior politicians while sitting on the bog?
* Which President/s received the Nobel Peace Prize in the 20th Century?
* Which Presidents survived assassination attempts?
* Which President played pool and snooker regularly with his buddies in the White House?
* Which President had a son in the senate with aspirations to the Presidency?
* How many Presidents were married more than once? Who were they?
* Which President had a toy animal named after him?
* Which President had a daughter who married the grandson of another President?
* How many Presidents were impeached?
* Which Presidents were vice-President before taking over the office of President.
Here are two others to speculate on:

Which President was a"shortie" but was tough as nails?
Who, in your view, was the most effective President in the 20th Century?

Give it a try. No cheating. No reference books. Off the bat.

Answers next week.

Pretty good, but he said 20th century.  And in answer to your question, it was Tyler (Tippicanoe and Tyler too).

Which President, other than JFK and Ike, was decorated for service in WW2? Bush Sr. Also only survivor from his plane when shot down over the pacific.

Which two presidents were assassinated in the twentieth Century? JFK, erm...Mckinley?

How many presidents were Generals before taking up office? (20th Century only). Eisenhower and Truman

Which President was never elected by popular vote? damn, I should know this.....

Which two Presidents were born with different surnames? no clue.

Which President advised Senator Joseph Mc Carthy in the early fifties? probably nixon

Which President sought advise from advisors and Senior politicians while sitting on the bog? again, sounds like tricky dick.

Which President/s received the Nobel Peace Prize in the 20th Century? JFK?

Which Presidents survived assassination attempts? Reagan, Clinton (remember the incident with the airplane?), technically, Mckinley survived the first ones.

Which President played pool and snooker regularly with his buddies in the White House? No se.

Which President had a son in the senate with aspirations to the Presidency?

How many Presidents were married more than once? Who were they?

Which President had a toy animal named after him? The "Teddy Bear, for Theodore Roosevelt, after the stories of his hunting expeditions.

Which President had a daughter who married the grandson of another President?

How many Presidents were impeached? FDR just missed it for the court packing thing, and bill "i did not sleep with that woman under oath" clinton, right?

Which Presidents were vice-President before taking over the office of President. Bush 1, Ford, Nixon (and he was worse as veep than in the white house even), umm, whoever the hell replace Mckinley, LBJ, etc.

Which President was a"shortie" but was tough as nails? A shortie? Huh?

Who, in your view, was the most effective President in the 20th Century? Both the Roosevelts, and maybe eisenhower.

Which President do you think was the most charismatic? I can think of three? damn, lots of these, not always the best presidents, but charismatic......Teddy Roosevelt for the old school, Nixon for the evil Rasputin thing (did you see the Checkers speech? sheesh.), JFK as the playboy, and Reagan the Cowboy. Clinton sucks balls, but gets honorable mention for some great speeches and his magnetic attraction of the female of the species.

Where are you from adnauseum? I am impressed if you know this much about American presidents and aren't American. I have always been a history buff and I like to think that I am well read but several are puzzlers.

Hi Locamama,
I am a South African living in Egypt and I have two children in the UK. I have a small library of Americana and I enjoy studying American History.
Favourite book (so far) Lyndon Johnson, Master Of The Senate. This isalso a clue to one of my questions!

If you are talking about that one, it was a son in law, and his pecker got the best of him! (Chuck Robb)

I have no clue on the Bog one.  He said Harding (I figured with Teapot Dome, he spent a lot of time on it! ) was wrong.  You wanna take a stab at it?

LBJ?

LBJ?

He was very "earthy" as my history teacher was telling me (the day LBJ died).  I'll go along with that one.

For the record, Ford was the only person to be both president and vice president and never get elected to EITHER office.

Actually, it is a trick question.  Since no President is elected by the popular vote, the real answer is all of them.

Yes, I guess as a team, you're getting there! Answers tomorrow.

Hmm, that sounds like there is more than 1 trick question.  How about tonight for the answers?  I have not googled them in anticipation of seeing how many I got right without it.
