Uninstalling IconPackager

Small problem

I downloaded IP to see what it had to offer, looked through the icon options (but did not change any of my icons/settings) and decided that I did not want to change any icons at all.

I uninstalled it easily enough, but as soon as the uninstall wizard finished, some of my settings changed, such as:

1. My cursor (which was set to the windows scheme inverse) changed back to standard white

2. The file icons for MS Word changed to icons for WordPad (the files still opened with MS word, just the look of the icon changed)

3. All image files (.jpg, .bmp, etc...)changed back to defaults instead of the Microsoft Office Picture Manager icons that were there before I uninstalled IP.

I changed all the icons/cursors back that I could find, but wanted to ask if this happened to anyone else?

also, have any other changes been made because of the uninstall that I did not catch? (I only found changes to MS word icons, image file icons and cursors)?

Once again, during the time that I had IconPackager, I did not use it to make any changes whatsoever to my system.

I run Windows XP home edition with sp2.

Thanks in advance.

First of all, we apologize for any inconvenience this has caused you. Which version of IconPackager were you using?

The file icons for MS Word changed to icons for WordPad (the files still opened with MS word, just the look of the icon changed)

This one I have seen, and it still remains.

When restoring all icons, or uninstalling, the ".doc" file association goes to "Wordpad".

Other than the fact that XP includes Wordpad, and is therefore the default program for ".doc" files - I am not sure what the technical reason is behind the association change.

I am in the habit of going to "My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > File Types tab > select the ".DOC" listing > click the "Advanced" button > click the "Change icon" button > navigate to, and select the WINWORD.EXE file (found in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office 10" folder) > assign the Word document icon as the default ".doc" icon.

I have seen this behavior in both the free and full versions of IP3.

Thanks for your replies!

Milksama, I had downloaded the latest free version, sorry I don't remember the exact version number.

Corky_O, I restored the icons through the folder options in my computer, and they're fine now (took a while to weed through all the ones that went along with Microsoft Office Picture Manager ) I understand that the .doc icon changed b/c wordpad is the default word processor (and I guess the icons associated with images went back to their defaults too, since the MS office picture manager is not the default), but is it common for the mouse pointer to change too?

but is it common for the mouse pointer to change too?

I have not seen this, but there is a "Restore all Cursors" function under the Tools menu in IconPackager.

I would guess (and this is a guess), that during the uninstall procedure, the cursors were restored automatically - perhaps due to this function being a part of the program.

Perhaps milksama, or another official support rep. will be able to clarify at some point.

Silverbullet38,

I do not use Firefox, but you should be able to use the Tools > Folder Options > File Types tab > select HTML (or HTM) file > click Advanced button > click the Change icon button > browse to the Firefox.exe file > select and apply the icon you want (if it is in that file).

I tried that and if i choose firefox to open the file as default the advanced button changes to restore and i cannot get to the change icon dialoge. When i have changed the icon before i set firefox as the program to open it with it just keeps the iE logo and doesnt change it.

Silverbullet38,

I also use firefox, and have the same problem: I can't change the icons for HTM and HTML to the firefox ones (ff is already set as the default browser and to open that file type on my comp, but if I click "change" then "firefox" and "ok" it changes the icon in the preview only and the "advanced" button becomes "restore"; going through "advanced: change icon" also only changes the icon in the preview).

Is there any way to get the proper firefox icon to represent html and htm again?

Thanks in advance.

Found the solution!

IconPackager must have altered the registry.

In the registry editor, in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{42042206-2D85-11D3-8CFF-005004838597} under Old Icon there are folders for FirefoxHTML and htmlfile. If you look in the default icon subfolder under each of them, it gives the path to the icon used in each instance.

Under FirefoxHTML the path for the icon should be C:\PROGRA~1\MOZILL~1\FIREFOX.EXE,1. The icon was showing up as the one for IE because the path there was C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe,1 (this path is the one that should be in the default icon folder for htmlfile not FirefoxHTML).

Changing the path in FirefoxHTML\Default Icon to C:\PROGRA~1\MOZILL~1\FIREFOX.EXE,1 fixes the problem.
