According to Arbitron: D.C. Air America outlet .eq. zero

Since I cut out my subscription to the Washington Post, the daily standard bearer for the liberal main stream media, I missed a little nugget in their radio/television/media column. I'm a bit surprised that it wasn't mentioned in another site that I frequent, but then again, given the very obvious political leanings and complainings at that site (www.dcrtv.com), I'm not that surprised that there wasn't a mention of this news there.

With a nod of my baseball cap towards vanhelsing's great site: http://www.moonbattery.com/ and to the original source, The Washington Post, who buried the news down at the end of a long column mostly talking about Howard Stern's ever shrinking audience as he gets closer and closer to making the big leap over to Sirius Satellite Radio after the first of the year, there was this very interesting little bit of news over the last several months (reported in the last week):

Air America, the liberal talk network carried on WWRC-AM (1260), went from bad to nonexistent. After WWRC recorded a mere fraction of a rating point in the spring with syndicated shows from the likes of lefty talkers Al Franken, Janeane Garofalo and Stephanie Miller, Arbitron couldn't detect a measurable listenership for the station this time around.

Original WP article can be found here: The Washington Post: Shock Jock's Audience Is Beating Him to the Door

VanHelsing's site can be found here: http://www.moonbattery.com/ (worth a visit if you are interested in rightward leaning articles).

I will say I can't think of a nicer (sarcasm meters should be registering "dripping") group of people than the flamers at Air America to have their ratings go completely into the dumper.

Actually, VanHelsing probably said it best here:

Here we see one of the many pitfalls of capitalism, from the left-wing point of view. Give people a choice, and they just might chose wisely.

Good catch, Terp. Knowing the Post they probably hid it in the bottom left corner of page 8 in 1/2 point font size.
I remember working for a radio station in high school that was excited to APPEAR on the Arbitron rating system, so I can relate to just how small a listenership a station has to have to not show up on the Arbitrons.
It was a light rock station in Prescott, Arizona, that could not be heard outside a 25 mile radius even during the best weather conditions. We showed up on the Phoenix Arbitron list, and the powers-that-be actually thought the person who filled us in must have gotten the call letters wrong.

This is the way Air America ends; not with a bang but with a whimper.

Another point: Arbitron ratings determine advertising rates (the higher lilstenership you have, the more you can charge for ad time).
Another nail on the coffin if they can't charge but a pittance for their advertising.

It seems even liberals just don't want to hear the crap anymore either. ;~D

I'm not sure where it was actually buried in the print edition, but I'm fairly certain it was not front page of the Style section, which is where media news starts. The bulk of the article was on Stern, with the Air America news in the last paragraph of the piece. That means it would have been "after the jump line" meaning it would require the reader to open that section of the paper and follow the article to read to the end. Most likely page 7 (give or take), where the TV news and TV program listing grid is shown on the facing page. Not somewhere where people would find it prominently.

That part is great news obviously. Though I would be most happy if they aired a ton of ads for the Virginia Governor's race and left the TV stations without them. The mud slinging between both candidates in that race has been terribly annoying.

Think about the magnitude of this news though. The D.C. area liberal talk outlet gets zero (or undetectable) ratings. The capitol of the free world. The home of democracy. The home area for the representatives for the 50+ million non-GWB voters that represent approximately 42% - 48% of the country (currently). Not even those representatives, or even their staffers, are listing to the puke that is spewing from Garofalo or Franken.

If you can't even attract your own kind in a town that is home to the liberals that represent approximately half the country, then you have serious problems.

That leaves Air America with L.A. and N.Y. City and not much else. And I have to think that the climate in L.A. (with Ah-nuld in the Statehouse there) isn't all that great either.

The final tally in 2004 for DC was Kerry: 90%, Bush 9%, Nader 1%. And nobody is listening to Air America? In the immortal words of Ross Perot, "Well, that's just sad."
