Defend Tom Delay? Not Today My Left-leaning Friends

Odds are good that one of those outcomes will hold true. Doesn't excuse the unethical behavior though. Delay is big on personal responsibility and ethical norms. While his actions here were not outright illegal they sure as hell weren't ethical.

If DeLay get caught wither breaking the law or breaking the spirit of the law, or found guilty of enethical behavior, he MUST GO!

Can you detail those?  I am not being combative, but I would like to see what you feel is unethical.

Finding creative ways of money routing in order to circumvent the sort of political finance reform law that your own party espouses meets my definition of both "unethical" and "hypocritical". Delay is a master of this crap but the very hot 2002 Texas race seems to have made him a bit careless regarding the timing of this one.

While I am glad about the 02 election results, I am unhappy to see them tarnished with this sort of backdoor fundraising horseshit.

Yup, if he is guilty let the legal and political chips fall where they may. However, if he isn't, let Earle sink in his own rhetoric. As long as were at it, why should the investigation of campaign finance stop on his lap, the ball is rolling, I say that there should be a House (and Senate) cleaning. If he broke the law, and what he did was not uncommon in Washington... Swing that ax and watch the Chips fly!!

Also, just think what could be accomplished if State AGs and DAs would but this much zeal into cleaning up voter and election fraud!! Of course, in the Democrats in this state are against that, since many of them owe their jobs to voter fraud. ;~D

This is also one of the problems with how we've allowed the house and senate to become so national and party driven. Congressman DeLay's actions should be the concern of the people of his district. Democrats are trying to make this out to be a Republican thing, and a black eye on Prs. Bush. Like Prs. Bush appointed him or something. Just goes to show that the crime to which he stands accused is only part of the motivation here.

I think it had a good intent... just didn't work hard enough at the loopholes. Fact of the matter is that without banning private contributions (necessitating federal money for campaigning *blech*) there really is not a good way to stop crap like this. Unless you count altruism as an effective counter-measure. (If you do think altruism is a good solution please email me for a special deal on some land I have)

I don't doubt Delay has done iffy things, but like he says I don't think they are a bit different than what both parties do on a daily basis. Does that excuse it? Nope.

Watch this prosecutor. The last time he couldn't make a case stick, he refused to show his evidence in court because he feared the judge wouldn't allow it. Then when the judge threw the case out he invited reporters and showed the evidence to them.

Look at his quotes about this case. This isn't a prosecutor looking into a case of wrongdoing, this is a guy bent on taking someone down and hunting to find a tool to do it.

Is Delay corrupt? I don't think he's a stich more so than any other major politician. I think if this prosecutor was truly interested in crimes, he'd have a LOT more on his plate than one big name every few years.

I think you could probably make the case that Joe Leiberman is less corrupt quite easily.

Sorry, too jaded here to even consider trying to. By the time you are party "mouth", you are party to what your party is into. He had enough party clout to get a vice-presidential bid. The Dems do the same corporate laundering the Republicans do, so I doubt seriously Leiberman could possibly be so popular in his party without dirtying his hands.

Time will tell (hopefully) whether there is any fire associated with this smoke. While much has been made of Earle being an "equal opportunity" prosecutor (more Dems in his crosshairs than Repubs), turns out they were virtually all political opponents or high-profile targets of opportunity. I have my doubts about the validity of the charges as they relate to DeLay.

As for McCain-Feingold, no amount of good intentions can make up for its fundamental flaw - politicians trying to regulate what, how & how much citizens can say about politicians simply abridges free speech, period. It was a bad idea turned into bad legislation and should be repealed. It failed in its alleged objective to boot. McCain shouldn't count on that bit of his resume helping his presidential chances.

I am a fan of Joe Leiberman & think he's a solid guy. Betcha soup to nuts that if you looked carefully, you'd find some fundraising irregularities (given the complexity of the laws involved, technical violations are easy & common) on the same order as those of which DeLay is accused. The press (& certainly, Mr. Earle) has no interest in embarrassing Joe, however - they're mainly interested in embarrassing Bush, even if they have to use surrogate targets to do it. DeLay's appearance & mannerisms put me off, but that's an irrational basis for judging his character. If he's guilty of anything, let the chips fall where they may & "Hear, Hear" Mr. Earle. I'll just wait awhile to start holding my breath.

How about Paul Wellstone before he died? Seriously, there are politicians who are far less corrupt than Delay. Don't let partisanship blind you to the easy ones.

Call me a cynical person, but politician = corrupt in my mind. That corruption may only be minor, but all politicians are corrupt. Even the doctor in the next town over that is a County Supervisor. I personally like the guy, but I think he's a little corrupt 'cause of what it takes to become a County Supervisor there.
