Bush: Spending cuts, no tax hikes, for Katrina

‘I’m confident we can handle it,’ he says of anticipated $200 billion outlay

Good news (unless you are constantly demanding tax increases as some certain Clueless Old Joe Users might be), as reported by MSNBC -- NO TAX HIKES to pay for Katrina recovery efforts, instead President Bush will work with Congress to control spending and make cuts elsewhere.

Of course, 10 years or so from now, when another disaster of some sort hits, there'll be cries that the cuts that were made now kept some important repairs and up-keep from happening elsewhere that would have prevented another Katrina style disaster, without any mention of the fact that states and local governments will also be rolling in tons of money and still will be taking in tons of federal grants for pork-barrel projects of all types.

Anyway, again, on the headline reporting alone, this is good news -- again, unless you are a certain Clueless Old Liberal -- no tax hikes (which would harm the economy much more than a relatively puny amount of current deficit spending in order to rebuild is doing).

Headline below is linked. See original article for entire story, rather than just the small clipping here.

WASHINGTON - President Bush said Friday the federal government must slash unnecessary spending to pay for Gulf Coast reconstruction, but he ruled out raising taxes. “You bet it will cost money, but I’m confident we can handle it,” Bush said.
“It’s going to cost whatever it’s going to cost, and we’re going to be wise about the money we spend,” Bush said a day after laying out an expensive plan for rebuilding New Orleans and the Gulf Coast without spelling out how he would pay for it.
“The key question is to make sure the costs are wisely spent and that we work with Congress to make sure that we are able to manage our budget in a wise way, and that is going to mean cutting other programs,” he added.

Just imagine of Kerry was President, we'd all be paying 70% in taxes.
