Eoin came to work at my place of business a couple of years ago. We got along famously. he was doing his placement year for his marketting degree. It was only for a year though, and he had to leave eventually.
A couple of weeks after he left, he gave me a phone call and said he and a bunch of mates from school were starting an indoor soccer team, and he would like me to play for them.
Eoin knew i played, because we had a work team, and he knew that i would get along with his mates, so he thought of me - know, it wasn't because of my deadly left foot
I jumped on board, and haven't looked back... that was about August 2002... I have since become best of friends with the whole team.
We couldn't all decide on a name - it was going to be Stoners United, but the centre would not allow it, damn conservative prudes. So Nameless F. C. was born.
The team consists of:
- Ed our goal keepr - Ed is our team, he is one of the best goal keepers i have ever seen!
- Tony, he plays in random positions, but mostly defence - can kick a goal or two.
- Sean, he plays mostly in defence, he cant play this season though - he gets injured alot!
- Tom, the captain - he runs around like a headless chook! very dedicated though!
- Dave, he used to be rather crap, but as time has gone by developed some skillful moves!
- Eoin, he plays up front - an excellent right foot, but absolutely no left foot to speak of!
And of course the Mug Man. I play mostly mid-forward...
All these guys went to school together you see... and their lives have suddenly become quite entangled within mine. They are my very best friends in the whole world, and through them, i have met some other fantastic people as well! It never mattered that i was an 'outsider' - From day one they accepted me, and in this world, people who truely understand and embrace you are very hard to find.
We have won a couple of premierships, and some runners up, but last season we didn't even make the finals. It was most unusual for us.
Tonight is our first game of this season, and i am looking forward to it imensely. Eoin is on his way over to pick me up now. It doesn't really matter whether we win or lose, because its just a game - of course i would be lying if i didn't acknowledge i suffer from white line fever, and that i have a most competative spirit, but in the end - i have made the best friends of my life, and we look out for each other.
