Environmentalists are to blame

Let's all thank the leftist envrionmental wackos who once again derailed a project that would help this country.


n the wake of Hurricane Betsy 40 years ago, Congress approved a massive hurricane barrier to protect New Orleans from storm surges that could inundate the city.

But the project, signed into law by President Johnson, was derailed in 1977 by an environmental lawsuit. Now the question is: Could that barrier have protected New Orleans from the damage wrought by Hurricane Katrina?

"If we had built the barriers, New Orleans would not be flooded," said Joseph Towers, the retired chief counsel for the Army Corps of Engineers New Orleans district.

Tower's view is endorsed by a former key senator, along with academic experts, who say a hurricane barrier is the only way to control the powerful storm surges that enter Lake Pontchartrain and threaten the city. Other experts are less sure, saying the barrier would have been no match for Katrina.

That was 40 years ago. In 2001 Bush had a study that said what had to be done to prevent what just took place. Bush did NOTHING to even attempt to correct the problem! He CUT THE funding that was being provided by diverting it within the DoD budget from New Orleans to other uses!

And yet, the FACT that the Corp of Engineers spent $1.9 billion in Louisiana alone (#1, and $500 million more than the next highest state) and it went to stuff like ... oh, gee, what was that? Building a NEW lock from NO Harbor to the Mississippi River when it would have been cheaper (not to mention smarter) to repair/upgrade the existing lock? And that's at the direction of the great state of Louisiana. How about the $18 billion that Louisiana could come up w/ for charity, but can't come up with the matching funds for more federal money? Money that was designated as "if you don't match, you don't get" funds? Does that count as "He CUT THE funding" to you, COL? If so, your pronouns are wrong. It should be "She CUT THE funding" or "They CUT THE funding" because it then boils down to the Louisiana legislature or the state governor.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. There are levels of personal responsibility that begin on the citizen level, go up through city/county/state and then end at the government level—that's right, they end there. If you, as a state governor, know that your state is losing funding from the government, then it's your job, as governor, to find that money elsewhere. Your own state, for example. The government should not be in the business of handing out Band-Aids and states need to take responsibility, as do counties, cities, and citizens.

excellant point. all of them, there is enough blame to go around on all levels of government. municipal, state and federal. but the witless one can only blame BUSH.

That may have been 40 years ago. However "WHY" has it not been addressed before this? And I mean "before" 2000.
