I haven't seen it in the ranting and ravings of either side.

I think and I hope not to enflame anyone on age, but she is getting older and not as press savvy. So even if the words are in context, it might not mean what people are making it out to be.


"Everyone is so overwhelmed by the hospitality. And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this, this is working very well for them," Mrs. Bush told American Public Media's "Marketplace" program, before returning to her multi-million dollar Houston home.

On the tape of the interview, Mrs. Bush chuckles audibly as she observes just how great things are going for families that are separated from loved ones, people who have been forced to abandon their homes and the only community where they have ever lived, and parents who are explaining to children that their pets, their toys and in some cases their friends may be lost forever.



Also, the fact that this is from the National make me wonder about the slant of the story. Neverhteless, I wonder what others think of this.

I think what she meant is that this would be a new start for many of these people who were living in impoverished circumstances before the hurriciane. It isn't snobby when dabe or others scream about how poor and unprepared most of these people were, was it?

I think that what she meant was that these folks are finally getting a way out of the poverty trap they had found themselves in. They didn't PUT themselves in an impoverished situation, a lot of them were born into it....and whilst there are MUCH better ways out of poverty than a devastating hurricane there is now a ray of hope for these people and their families. And there is.

They are not out of the poverty trap, because of the storm. Now, they are out of homes, and living in the astrodome. Some of the lucky ones are being put up in people's homes. But, maybe they didn't want to lose their homes, even if their homes weren't the best mansions. It was extremely condescending and presumptuous for babs to say something like that.

That is whay I think she ment. She isn't press savvy as she was and she didn't pick over every word she said so it came out like this.

I don't think she ment 'let them eat cake', but I was interested in how JU people would look at it.

I doubt that ANYONE wanted to lose their home, even if they were living in a shack...but I hinestly don't think that she meant any harm or intended to be condescending when she said it.

To me, the people who excuse looting and defend the mayhem are saying "Let them eat cake" in worse fashion. I find it more offensive when people impose criminality and the inability to "make it" on the poor. Nothing disgusts me more than people who say "Leave the peasants alone, they NEED to (steal, filch off the government, etc.)
