Default Icons Disappeared

My Windows XP default icons disappeared. I have repaired the cache, etc. and nothing has happened. Is there somewhere I can download a new replacement? I do not have a Windows disk because my software was loaded at the time of purchasing my computer. Or any suggestions? Thanks for your time.

Normally, after applying an icon package with IconPackager, you would start Icon Packager > Tools > Restore all Icons > click Yes in the confirmation dialog > click the OK button at the bottom of IconPackager configuration panel.

Wait a few seconds while IconPackager applies the changes.

If this does not help, please post a list of what you have done, in which order, and someone can try to help.

You won't need your windows disk. None of your icons have dissapeared they are still on your computer. Many of the standard icons are included in a file called shell32.dll located in your Windows/System32 directory. Others are in the exe file for the program itself.
Follow Corky's advice and you should get them all back.

I have the same problem and I am quite desperate!

My OS is Windows XP Professional SP2.

I've just buyed a renewal for Stardock SW, then I updated all Stardock apps. and rebooted as requested.

Then, MANY icons all over my system are no more displayed on my Desktom, Explorer windows and Quick Start on the taskbar.

If I check for them by clicking on each link and navigate through "Property/Shortcut/Change icon", they are exactly where they should be, simply Windows Explorer doesn't show them at all.

Please, HELP me!

I did everything as suggested by Corky_O to csf1 but nothing changed.

Thank you in advance for your kind cooperation and bye.

Here's a guess...

Did both of you download a beta[b] version of IconPackager?

When I last did that it still had the much dreaded iprepair.dll
included in it which messed up all my icons too (

I managed to get the beta version of IconPackager uninstalled
and then could install a NON-beta version of IconPackager.

Try the following:

1. unload IconPackager, then start up Star Dock Central(SDC) and uncheck the setting "Show pre-release versions" and uninstall your current version of IconPackager.

2. delete the files that are left in the IconPackager folder (leave the Themes and Plugins folders and their content alone though).

3. reboot your machine and Star Dock Central(SDC) will now only show "stable" releases. You should then see the 3.00b.093 version or a newer stable(non-beta) version.

4. install the stable IconPackager version and reboot your machine again.

5. all icons should be showing again now.

Let me know how it goes =D

Thanks for all the suggestions..sorry it took so long to answer back. I have tried so many different ways to fix, I couldn't tell you my steps. I did find the shell of my icons and have it copied on my desktop. Now what do I do? Also, I have Version 3.00 installed, don't know if that's beta or not. I appreciate your time everyone.

csf1,

Have you tried the steps provided by lilstarfish?

The main goal is exactly as stated there - to get rid of "iprepair.dll" if it was installed, and to get version 3.00b.093 installed.

The fix for "iprepair.dll" was to unregister it using the Start > Run > Type: cmd > hit Enter > type: regsvr32.exe /u "c:\program files\stardock\object desktop\iconpackager\iprepair.dll" > hit Enter.

If the "iprepair.dll" file is not at address listed above, you would want to replace the address with the actual one on your machine - so, type: regsvr32.exe /u"ACTUALADDRESSHERE" > hit Enter.

You could try this if lilstarfish's suggestion fails.

If both fail, you might go with a System Restore if possible.
