Express check-out lines and education in this country

We don't really need another intelligent design thread, but I could throw out as proof that evolution is not necessarily working the rude, inconsiderate, illiterate or just plain stupid individuals that were in the lines in front of me just a bit ago at the local well known grocery store.

What part of "Express Lane, 12 items or less" is so tough for people to read, understand and adhere to??

I stood in a long express lane, waiting behind a gentleman that very obviously was well within the rules. One hand-carried basket with perhaps 8 items total in it. But between us and the cashier's end of the line were 3, count them, 3 women. 2 black, 1 white, who couldn't seem to count to save their butts. First person in the line had somewhere around 2 dozen items on the belt getting rung up. No big deal, right? She probably was waved into that lane from one of the longer lines. B/S! There were very long lines everywhere in the place, especially in the non express line. Regardless though, the sign at the end of the lane clearly states 12 items or less. As does the sign over head. I understand if the cashier or one of the management types starts directing people to that line, but that didn't happen at all.

Next in line had at least 18 items (don't blame me for counting... I was bored as hell standing there having my two boxes of frozen french bread pizza thawing on me). Again, no big deal.

Woman #3 in the line was the one that sort of got my goat. She chatted it up with the casheir mentioning that she had done the same job before at another major grocery store chain. WHAT?!?!?! If she had, then damnit, she should certainly have been capable of counting, and knowing she was standing in the line with 18 items herself.

What is it that makes some idiots think they can set their own rules in these ways. Never mind everyone else that is minding the rules, helping to get through the lines as quickly as possible to get their business done and let others do the same. Some people are just too good for rules. Much like habitual speeders that think the speed limits apply to all but them (admittedly, I can found guilty as charged of that much of the time, but that is a different story). It seems that some people just don't friggin' care about anyone or anything else. Me, me, me.

Yup, the old rules that only the best survive have got to be wrong, and this is proof positive. It's not the best that survives, it's the rudest, stupidest, luckiest. The ones that were given passes in schools when it came to simple, every day business mathematics. 1 + 1, +1, +1 and many more does not equal 12. Hell, more than a simple basket full of stuff does not equal 12 (or fewer) in most cases.

I'd love to see these grocery stores implement rules that charge fines for each additional item over the express lane limit. Start at $1 for the first item, $2 for the second over, $3 for the third, and keeping working the way up. Perhaps then the inconsiderate individuals would learn their lessons, or at least would be forced to pay some heed to what they are doing.

In lieu of that, I propose that we make killing people that take too many items through the express lanes a misdemeanor offense. {big wide evil grin} In many places, I would think the jury of peers would be more than happy to see the victim get their just rewards.

WIth these intelligent cash registers, I am surprised that stores have not built in a cut off on them.  12 items, no more will register!

I have seen a few cashiers that basically tell the miscreants to "take another line".  And I cheered them!  But most of the time, they just accept them.

Callous people are with us always.  Fortunately, there are not a lot down here.  But we do run into them on occassion.

It might be inconsiderate, but it's not stupid. They know they have too many items. They also know that the checker's not likely going to send them away unless they have a whole cart full.

I've gone into the express lane with too many items before. Usually I've got the kids with me, and I don't have time to count, but I know that I have *close* to ten items. And there's been times when I knew I had 12 or 13, but I didn't want to wait forever in the other lines over 2 or 3 excess items.

Call me inconsiderate. Call me a rule-breaker. Hehe.

Here on the base we have something a little different. At certain times of the day, primarily during the lunch hour, Soldiers in uniform take precedence over civilians in the express line (and at the barber shop).

They strongly enforce this rule, and you DO NOT get to quietly go ahead of a Soldier without the cashier noticing.

This isn't a problem for me, though, because 99% of the time I let Soldiers in uniform go ahead of me regardless of what time or which line it is (exception at the commissary for reasons too detailed to go into here, haha). I figure if they're in uniform, they don't have a lot of extra time to waste standing in line.

Wellll, I was recently guilty of such an "infraction". Here's why.

Our local major grocery chain has "self checkout" on all but one or two registers at all times. I hate self checkout. I especially hate it because, at this particular store, once you've gone through the tedium of running all of your items through the checkout and had the attendant override half of your purchase because the chekout apparently scans only barcodes that translate directly to Farsi, then an eager person shows up willing to help you lug the groceries out to the car. No thanks, I already did the hard work...go get a job at McD's if you want to smile that cheesy smile at me...but I digress.

Anyway, I was at this particular store one day when one checkout was open. After partly unloading my cart, I noticed this checkout (the ONLY one in the store with a REAL LIVE teller, mind you) was an express checkout. And I'd be damned if I was moving one inch.

And the glare from the 80 year old woman with a jar of pickles, a Fleet Enema and a copy of Redbook (I don't EVEN wanna know about her weekend plans) didn't phase me in the slightest!

At our local Major chain Superstore (MCS)*L* there are 6 express lanes, and something like 42 regular checkouts and 8 self checkouts. I never have less than 18 items (the express limit) And I know who the "bad" checkers are, you know who I'm talking about, older than dirt, can't see for nothing, can't figure out her register, or even how to count money (any combination of).

So here it is, the only lane that sells cigarettes, is one of the express lanes. ONE out of 56 lanes and it has to be and express lane located in the middle of all the lanes. Not one of the other lanes will get cigarettes from behind that lane. There are always people that go through that lane with a cartload full. The stores policy is to just tolorate them I guess.

I prefer the self checkouts, especially since most people don't, so I'm not rushed, there is almost never anyone behind me so if I have to chase a kid, I can, and if one has to use the bathroom and cannot wait, the attendent can pause it and all I have to do it tell her on the way there. *L* I try not to shop with my kids to often LOL.

to you!
