HELP: Natural Desktop 1.50.008

I got nothin

I installed the latest Natural Desktop (1.50.008) this AM. When I run it I get nothing. It shows as running in Task Manager but that is all. Nothing displays on the desktop.
I just reformatted and have not reinstalled desktopX yet.
Any clues?

Hi night Train, dunno what's causing your issue, but I just installed it and it knocked out IE, IconX and IconPacker, maybe other stuff too but I didn't bother to check and just uninstalled it. Everything's working fine now, but obviously there's an issue somewhere with it, so hopefully somebody with some knowledge will come along soon with some insight into things.

Best of luck with it

oh crap! Don't tell me that!
My download/install (SDC) finished this morning, but I didn't get a chance to try it yet. Now I'm not too sure if I want to.

Starkers... at what point did you notice this (I rarely use IE, and my icons are hidden)? After install? reboot? logon? when running ND? When you uninstalled, did you have to put the IE,IconX/packager back or did they just start working again? Is it possibly tied to the icon packager repair issue? {I'm at work and wondering what I'm gonna get when I get home}.

Night Train... maybe consider editing title to something along the lines of "Errors with..."? {I know, it's in the Support section..but if your busy and scanning titles, key words like help & errors kinda stand out...- just a thought}

Good idea.

It has not effected anything else so far. IE works fine. I even braved the waters and went and downloaded the latest IP. No problems there. My only issue (that I have noticed) is Natural Desktop not showing on the desktop. However, I am redownloading everything after reformatting and haven't had alot of time other than downloading.

I just rebooted and the wallpaper changed but still nothing else. Kinda funny since the wallpapers are what I turn off first.

bump - it slipped

Night Train: for some reason I keep thinking locking/unlocking the desktop has an affect on ND... not sure and I'm not home yet so I can't even check mine (starkers: come on! give me something to work with just in case. )

It's a nice program, so I'd be hesitant to rain on the story. But then again, I hope mine works

Locking/unlocking/... no changes. Just wallpaper and sounds. I can live with the wallpapers but not the sound.

Tried installing DesktopX..nuthin. DesktopX works fine.

I am running dual monitors just in case it has anything to do with it.
It has worked fine in the past. Again, this is a completely fresh install.

starkers: Could you elaborate on "knocked out"? Natural Desktop isn't a system changing program or anything, it just does its own thing . . . IconPackager has had problems of its own, recently. I'd suspect your problems are linked to that if you updated that at the same time.

Night Train: Are you using any kind of virus checker there that might be blocking it from coming up? What exactly is your monitor setup? (which is the primary monitor, what sizes and arrangement do you have?)

GR,

Virus checker does the usual pop (twice) for me to allow it to run. After checking to allow I get nothing.

Monitor set up is:
1280 x 1024 (1)..1280 x 1024 (2)
Primary is 1. Both LCD

GE Force 6600gt vid card.

Thanks for the help.

What if you turn off your virus checker and try running it - does it show up then?

What virus checker is it? (if you have any details about virus checker engine numbers, that might be useful, but just the name and main version would probably do)

I had a little trouble killing what was McAfee Virusscan 2004 8.0. Grrrrr. Too many processes and a lack of intelligence = derrrr,
I broke down and uninstalled the whole thing and Natural Desktop starts up fine now. Dummy me forgot to look for an engine number before uninstalling.

This obviously isn't an acceptable trade off, but is ok for now. I will try reinstalling McAfee again, but not til tomorrow. Had enough of this, Going to the laptop.

Thanks for the help Greenreaper. MCafee has no options I could find to make a difference. Maybe tomorrow I will have better luck.

At least I am assured that that is the problem. We have had another tester who had similar problems! Thank you for your valuable feedback, and we shall be contacting McAfee about this, you can be sure . . .

ND - working
IE - still working
IconX still working
IconPackager - still waiting the Troll to grow a couple and give it a go

Runs fine here with ZA Pro 5.5.

It also seems much more polished than the first release - nice job people!

NT -

Here's hoping McAfee issue is short-lived.

Any luck yet NT?

Bichur, sorry about the delay in answering.

My problem began when ND was first installed and after a reboot. When my system restarted I noticed that my icons had been replaced with just the shells and IconX wasn't functioning, nor was CursorXP Plus. All were working prior to ND's install and all had to be reactivated manually.

When reopening IE, I got a message about a script change pop up and disappear before I could read it properly. IE would not open with my yahoo home page or MSN.....page could not be displayed on everything except Major geeks.

Even after uninstalling ND, I still could not open IE until running CC Cleaner to clean junk files and issues....after that everything went back to normal and I haven't tried reinstalling ND to retest it. Given the script error message, I'm taking a wild guess at the problem being with the weather settings, perhaps?

'Tis a nifty bit 'o gear tho, so I'll give it another shot later

That's odd. I still don't understand how it could be connected to Natural Desktop, though. It literally doesn't install any system files, the only thing it does is download weather from the internet. The only files it touches are inside its own directory. You can check this for yourself by looking at the install log (C:\Program Files\Stardock\SDCentral\Installed\nd.log, if you use Stardock Central, probably install.log if you do not)

What is the "Script change popup" that you mentioned - some kind of script monitoring system?

GreenReaper:
Got a question about the weather - before I would put in my zip and it would show my location and such, now it only shows that choice which i make through the options so it now shows one close to me (20-40 miles depending on which) - can I fine tune it? did I miss an obvious instruction somewhere? was the previous version trying not to upset my & showing my town but using one close?

Me has liked this thing since it 1st came out by the way
Reply #18 Top
That's exactly what it was doing before - just picking the closest. Alas, most towns don't yet have their own weather stations. This way you get a choice, so if the closest weather station doesn't provide good forecasts, you can pick another.

It's also kinda neat just picking random zip codes and seeing what the closest towns/airports/cost guard stations/whatever are.

So it...it...it lied to me?
It just led me on? Letting me think everything was okay when there coulda been a tornado?

Actually I'm kinda surprised. I thought it was going through weather.com using the zip to pull up my particulars.

eh, don't really matter It does originate from where I commute to plus = Severe weather - tv comes from austin, weather maps on the net I pull from there or SA or CC whilst using Will Rose's Animated Weather Satellite and Radar v2.1a Widget

also wondering: there are more and more 'local' weather station setup linked into the net - you know, those guys who have the setups in their garage or shed or somewhere... any future possibility of getting an option to tie into them also?

That was what I meant - what did you think they did?

We can perhaps look at getting e.g. more local radar maps when you click for radar from the standard weather site, but as for the local stations, unless there's a standard, we can't just "tie in" - there's nothing to tie-in to!

Okay, before I would put in my zip 78644 and the map and everything would show as Lockhart, now I put in 78644 and it makes me choose a station, but no longer shows me as Lockhart. tis where i got confused on the process.

so, they are atually giving me Austin info instead of Lockhart, yet telling me it's Lockhart?

but...but...but...oh crud, nevermind - getting over this Trolls head.

I'll just look at the pretty pictures and listen to the cool sounds.

psst... next version, I think you ought to make it sneak in some rush hour scenes/sounds - like only on Mondays.

What they might be doing is giving you a blend of information from weather stations in the area. I suspect they are not going to that much effort, though.

8 to 9 AM?

Picturing: Sir Bichur hunkered down, looking disbelievingly at his screen while the roof blows off the house saying "but?, but? weather.com says fine & mild ??"
