I think I made a difference finally in all my letter writing and web blogging. On June 28th I posted this article: Link and also July 19th this one
Link which clearly outline the misleading information that people were being fed by my local paper The Gainesville Sun (
Link) I wrote letters to the Sun and to its parent paper, the New York Times. I also sent e-mails to the AP and its staff. I tried to find out why this misinformation was going on.
Then today it happened. I was sitting and reading my paper this morning before work, like I always do and saw an article titled "U.S. urges Iraq to finalize charter", an AP story. And there in the storys space was the insert/blurb that I had seen before and gotten so insensed about before. But there was something different this time. The insert, all in bold print read like this "As of Sunday, at least 1,794 members of the U.S. military have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003, according to the Associated Press count." Then added onto that, which has not appeared before was this in regular print "At least 1,382 died as a result of hostile action."
Was this addition there because they got caught and did not want it to become a story in and of itself? I like to think that my rants, and I am sure others like me, made them realize that the average Joe sees through the misleading and faulty information they like to use to mislead the American Public and the world for that matter.
Thank you to the Gainesville Sun for seeing the light of truth and for changing the way they report the deaths in Iraq. You have restored a little of my faith in your paper. Not much, but at least some.
