Not Rehnquist, altho he still has time.  But now we are going to see the nastiest side of the democrats.  Watch for the vitriol and invectives to start flying!

Goddamnit... just give an up or down vote... that's all you have to do... that's all you should do. Don't give me crap about a miniroty being silenced or whatever... we're a representative democracy, our government is run by people that represent the majority, that's how the system is supposed to work!

A retirement was not surprising, and maybe I'm a little behind on this, but I sure didn't see Justice O'Connor as the next to step down.

This is the big one, the one the Congressional Democrats have been wringing their hands over. O'Connor has been the "swing vote" for a lot of years and the deciding vote in a lot of cases, the feathers are going to fly in the Senate now!!

Rehnquist was certainly the expected retiree... and there's still time, I think. If it had been Rehnquist that was stepping down, noone would have blinked. Conservative judge gets replaced by conservative judge. Not much of a shift.

Couldn't help but grin this morning, though, as I thought of the liberals squirming in their seats as they realized it was O'Connor that was retiring today. Must be a bit disheartening to realize you're losing an ally, allbeit an unpredictable one.

I agree totally.  I think Rehnquist would have been an easy one as the worst they would have gotten is a tit for tat.  But O'Connor being a swing vote, they are going to fight her replacement visciously.  They are already gearing up for the fight.

I think you are over estimating! Dodd and Kennedy have already made veiled threats to the President. Zilch would be no effect. McCain has had the opposite effect. He emboldened the clowns!

Nobody wins in a nuclear war. The Republicans will contaminate the senate for everybody, including themselves. The nuclear option was always meant to be a deterrent because of the horrible consequences. Remember radiation and nuclear fallout has no preference to Democrats or Republicans, but only to mutually assured destruction. Besides, what do you think will happen when the Democrats regain the majority?

Frankly? What SHOULD happen. The President will appoint the judges he wants as long as it is palatable to the majority of Americans.

More importantly, people MIGHT start taking who they elect to the White House and Congress more seriously, since they will actually feel the results in terms of their rights.

I remember Nixon. The Republican Party was in shambles. Several third parties sprang up to replace the seemingly dead GOP. One thing you can be sure of, Politics in America is fickled and one event can change everything.

Oh, I know it!  Already Biden is spitting on himself:

"If [Bush] sent up Edith Jones, I could assure you that would be a very, very, very difficult fight - and she would probably be filibustered," Biden told CBS's "Face the Nation."

In the next breath Biden corrected himself, saying: "I misspoke, I misspoke. Janice Rogers Brown is what I meant to say."

ANd he actually got elected!

If you can show me where the republicans used the filibuster on Judicial nominees in the past, your statement might have some relevance.  As it is, Ruth Buzzi got a unanimous vote, even tho she is left of Mao.

The difference between Nixon of the 70s and the democrats of the 21st century, is the Republicans took their lumps got over it and went on.  The democrats refused to take their lumps (it depends on what he meaning of the word is is), refuse to get over (Bush is a liar and a thief) it, and refuse to move on (Selected not elected).
