Problem

Well, I seem to have discovered a bug. Everytime I hit the next button after choosing opponents, the game crashes. Every time. I'm running a P4 2.8Ghz Dell laptop with newly updated drivers, so that shouldn't be a problem. All other programs were closed, and I tried a full reboot...nothing. any ideas?

edit >> I tried uninstalling and re DLing the game in case there was a DL error, and now the game won't even load. I have an error file...where should I send it? Thanks

You can email it to [email protected], also you should download SmartException (https://www.stardock.com/products/smartexception/) and reproduce the crash with that. It'll capture more error data that you can email in.

It could be that its a laptop and requires a more powerfull CPU that comes in larger PCs who knows probely when the retail version comes out or even a later Beta 2 bulid V.22?

2.8Ghz is probably enough.

jonranda, does your laptop use onboard video? Sometimes onboard isn't enough to run the 3D engine.

Thanks for the feedback.

I DL'd smart exception, installed it, re-ran the program, and mailed the error log and the smartexception .zip file to the address indicated in smartexception. My laptop does indeed use onboard video, so that could be the problem, but I have no problems running other 3D games like neverwinter nights and combat mission: afrika corps...any way to check on the precise 3D requirements? I don't play many super-graphics-oriented games (prefferring strategy) so I'm not terribly skilled when it comes to video drivers and the like. There was a paucity of info avaiblable on the site about hardware requirements, but references to older machines and scalability made me assume that a reasonably new computer should be able to handle it.

Thanks again for the responses.

I need a new nickname.

If other 3D games work, it sounds like you should have the capacity for GalCiv2, although I'm not entirely sure how GalCiv2's demands stack up against those other games. I believe the only other possible issue with the onboard video is whether it's DirectX 9.0 compatible. I'm not sure how you would go about checking that. Hopefully the Stardock people can figure out what the problem is.

I have DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904) installed, so that's not it either. sigh. I suppose I have to wait and see what is going on. Hey, maybe I did find some sorta bug and this is my contribution to the cause! Lol.

Again, thanks for the help.

It could be that your drivers don't fully support DirectX 9.0c.  Depending on what kind of video card you have, you might be able to get better drivers here:

Scott may have other input after seeing your files.

AHA! thanks, CariElf, problem solved. Those omega things are some pretty amazing drivers! makes all my other games look better, too!
Thanks everyone else for the advice.

I will toss out a warning. I just recovered my laptop (sony vaio) from a severe crashing problem (wouldn't boot sometimes, very frequent BSOD, etc.) that I ended up tracing back to the omega drivers. I hold little hope for myself that I will be able to play GCII. It's a shame that the laptop companies won't keep up with their video drivers... sigh.

Hi Scott - You should try emailing Omega about it. He's quite responsive and will likely try to track down the problem and fix it for his next driver release.
