Gene,

The only suggestions I would have is to reinstall Icon Packager if uninstalled > Reboot machine > Apply a package (try downloading and applying one of the newer ones - this one would do Link

After applying, take these steps, making sure to click the "OK" button after each selection and "Yes" button. This will close Icon Packager after a few seconds, at which point you will want to restart the program to perform the next step (it may take a few seconds to open, because IconPackager is usually working in the background for a bit to complete each step):

1 - Start Icon Packager > Tools > Restore all Icons (reminder - click "Yes", then "OK").
2 - Start Icon Packager > Tools > Rebuild Icon Cache (reminder - click "Yes", then "OK").
3 - Start Icon Packager > Tools > Repair Icon Images (reminder - click "Yes", then "OK").
4 - Start Icon Packager > Tools > Repair Shell Icons (reminder - click "Yes", then "OK").

After a few seconds - "Right-click desktop > Properties > Themes tab > select "Windows XP" in the Theme list (select classic once, then reselect Windows XP if the "Apply" button is not available) > Click "Apply".

This should set your icons back to normal.

If not, hopefully someone with a better idea will drop by, and you may want to contact tech support Email

Gene,
If Corky's sugestion worked then ignore the following...

To remove the hilight behind the icon try the following steps:
1. Go to Start/Control Panel/System
2. In System Properties select tab: Advanced/Performance/Settings
3. Under Visual Effects tab - make sure "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop" IS CHECKED
4. Click OK -- and that should do it.

I'm having the same problem as Gene. Recently I made a system restore(before the restore, I had no problems), after the restore, the icons were as Gene mentioned: Like I had highlighted them, and there's a nasty solid color residue around the icons on my desktop. See the picture.

See the coloring around the icons? I've tried what the two dudes up ^^^there said, and it didn't work. Please help~

GeneticJester,

It looks like you may have the "Lock desktop items" enabled.

Right-click desktop > Properties > Desktop tab > Customize Desktop button > Web tab > deselect "Lock desktop items" > OK > Apply.

This may have been the issue with Gene as well, I believe I misunderstood his issue at the time.

I hope this helps.

Sorry, could not edit above.

Easier way = right-click desktop > Arrange Icons By > deselect "Lock Web Items on Desktop".

That worked! Funny how right before I opened up my browser to check this thread and saw that that was enabled. I didn't touch it, because I didn't see that it could have had any kind of effect. Thanks for the help!
