The Music of GC II

Any ideas on what kind of music will be in GC2? I was trying GC1 & I really didn't like the Star Trek: NG feel to the opening music. The other music was also kind of bland. I have liked the music in Star Control 2 as well as
MOO 2, that has an atmospheric ambient sound akin to breathing & relaxation. Have you thought about contracting
some professionals, such as Steve Roach? He's the king of ambient. I'm sure he could make a great score for your
game. Fallout was good also.

All hail Fallout!

Good point about music, I'd like it to be a little more of a feature than it was in GC1. I found that the volume shifted about quite alot, the Drengin music was very loud and at other times I couldn't hear any music at all. It's not that I disliked GC1's music, I just thought it could have been implemented better.

GalCiv 2 has a very different sound track than the first one did.

I would say that music is very important to a games overall feel (the songs from star control 2 live on my hard drive). But I would recommend finding obscure college music, and using the themes of bands like 'Man or Astroman?', Brian Eno or 'Dead Can Dance'. Instead of hiring on professional musicians, just get some very inexpensive studio musicians who can mimic and adapt. Also you can only get so much creativity out of one musician when they are under a deadline.

Definintly. The main background music in MOO2 tends to put me to sleep.

You're gonna be singing too?

I hope to gods sake the races will speak in this game. I played the galciv demo and it seemed so very dead with none of the races talking, only text.

I think in Fragile Allegiance you could faintly hear the alien ambassador talking in 'sounds alien' gibberish. Was a nice touch.

If the staff wants to "sing" let them so add a custom juxebox to shut them up if they suck too much anyways i think the alien races should be able to "talk" to you So you hear their voices but you see text in the bottom or somting translated (the universal translator is not really effective for accurate oral comunication BUT it effectivly takes the incoming sound and transltes it into Readable human langauge text)

I think GalCiv 2 needs Death Metal and lots of screamer bands like static x to give it a good "Feel". oh wait no it doesnt.

Actually I really dont like aliens talking its always kind of driven me nuts, Maybe if it was on by default and we had the option to turn it off. It really drove me nuts in MOO 3 (okay moo3 drove me nuts but thats not the point). I kind of liked the text only setup for the simple reason of it allowed me to decide how they sounded.

If stardock really wanted to add voices (and I suggest they do, Reviewers love voices as long as they dont suck) then it'd be nice if there were diffrent voices based on the enemy cultures allignment (everyone is my enemy!) if they were good they should sound like it and if there evil well they should be evil sounding. also each race should have a diffrent voice actor BUT the alignment stuff should be done by the same voice actor whose just changing the pitch of there voice.

Uh this thread was about music right? Well just rember... no screamer bands and you'll do just fine!

Does anyone remember the game Descent: Freespace? It was a space-based flight combat game. I only bring it up because I liked the way they handled alien voices. If you received a radio transmission from an allied alien pilot, it would be just a bunch of strange grunts and stuff, but as the alien is talking there is a human voice english translation. It was like watching an interview on the news where the person is speaking in a foreign language, which you can hear in the background, while a translator speaks in the foreground. If there were voices in GC2, this would be a nice way to handle it so you don't have a bunch of aliens speaking english with really stupid accents (very cheesy).

Wouldn't it be neat if you heard sounds coming from the aliens that sounded like it should be speaking and the text gave you a translation or another voice gave you the ? But only if you had already researched the Universal Translator. Babylon 5 did this with several of their aliens. One such was the Gand, who carried a lightbulb like thing that did the translation. Of course, it makes sense that some aliens would be able to speak English (or some kind of Basic), so I think GC2 should have a mixture of both.

This. Was. Cool. I'd forgotten it did that, but it was great. That's one of the games that really sucked me in, at one late plot twist during several days of near solid play I caught myself saying "oh my god I'm dead", as if I actually thought I was there. I forced myself to walk away for a day or two for the sake of my sanity.

I'd love to see that implemented in GC2, but I imagine it would require alot of recorded voice acting to cover all the responses.

Incidentally, is that CariElf singing in the theme song?
