Race Editor

Since GC is not and probably wont become a Multiplayer game in terms of PBEM capabilities directly I was wondering if some sort of Race Editor could be created after the game is released.

Here we could have more sayso in what each race says and does etc along with the order.

Maybe a Human Race could be created and used multiple times in the editor so a PBEM could be created without password protection.

The basic thought comes from ACEdit 2.0 which is used in Sid Meyer's Alpha Centuri.

The game will include a custom race feature, but I think it is only intended to be used for the player's race. As I understand things, in GC1 each race had its own coded AI (so that each would act differently), if GCII takes the same approach it might be difficult for an AI to use a custom race properly.

As I stated in another post, if the developers allow people to do a full mod of the races (animations, voices and all), they could pick the ones they like incorporate them into later updates, and resell our own work back to us. Wow. Genius!

MP is not ruled out. It just wont be there for the 1.0 release. They've said in the past they're coding the game with an eye towards adding MP in an expansion if demand warrants.

As has been said, the AI will likely be hard-coded, meaning that it wouldn't be able to deal with changes to the race settings.

To Relic-
Every game out there that you can mod operates under the exact same rules. Epic can, and does, take community work and repackages it in Game of the Year editions for Unreal Tournament. There's nothing new here... but if you're at all familiar with Stardock, the chances of them taking your work and profiting from it without at least a prominent bit of credit given, are slim to none. They don't play that game... but it's just smart business to cover their butts like that. All content created for the game or with game tools remains their property. If you wanted to develop a very complex mod and sell it on your own, I'm sure you could negotiate a fee for licensing their game engine/technology.

So, it wouldn't be possible to have sort of a way to choose which AI such a custom non-playing race would use? I always imagined there being a sort of "Race Thought Type" thing which you could select a standard race's AI to control it. Basically, uh, "Race Thought Type: Korx" would yield a custom race controlled by the Korx AI...or "Race Thought Type: Yor" would bring a custom race controlled by the Yor AI.

Of course, this is assuming each civilization is going to have its AI written specifically for itself...o.o But I always liked the idea, and it'd help fan-made campaigns and stuff I'm sure. Just an idea I'd like thrown in there.

Definatly a good idea. Would add a that little bit more of 'easy' cusomisation to the game. It would still be quite a task to change ALL the graphics and Audio for the race but it would really help support the mod community.

Lucian Gyiira,

From what I recall of what we've been told of the inner workings of GC1, each major civ had its own AI with its own distinct strategy. I expect GC2's AI will follow that tradition as well.

As do I, Star Pilot -- it is one of the great things about GC1, I think. But hey, I try to be cautious when I hand out ideas. Just in case what I assume is going to happen doesn't. ^^;

Each races AI is setup to make the best use of its specific attributes, when you customise a race you change its attributes but the AI will still think it has the original settings. So if you took Yor, reduced their social production ability but increased their military production, the AI would not compensate for the new values. It would overproduce in military and under produce in social.

only problem with these types of games in multiplayer is that they take sooo long if you want a good game that you need REALLY dedicated people. I've been playing these types of games online since Master of Orion 2 on TEN and have yet to get in ONE that lasted.

Only thing we did was beat MOO2 on hotseat once but that isn't online.

This game is supposed to be really moddable so im sure you can make custom AI players. The AI is supposed to be adaptable as well.

What about Minor Race AI? Assuming there'll be Minor Races, they likely won't be using the Major Race AI patterns. So why not give any custom nonplayable race the Minor Race AI? That would be quite good, unless Minor Races are also going to work on specific parameters [or perhaps a lack of them, in this case].
