Netscape Hits 8.0

Because it's irrelevant?

I didn't even know it was still being developed.

Generally, people either use IE (or an IE variant) or Firefox, with a very small percentage using Opera. I can't remember the last time I heard someone say they were using Netscape.

Netscape 8 is actually rather cool. I like that it switches from the IE engine to the Firefox engine on the fly. I have WC setup to use the IE engine and most other sites to use Firefox. Only problem yet is that the Firefox extensions don't work on it. When my fvorite extensions are available for N8, I may start using it more regularely, but for now I can't live without extensions such as AdBlock and ForecastFox.

Isn't Netscape owned by AOL? If they are that would be my reason not to use Netscape.

Besides the fact I love IE.

So what about all the hype (I'll admit, I was into it myself) behind the ew browser wars? I would think Netscape coming out with a hybid IE and Modzilla rederig engine would be quite of interest with all the techies around here.

To me, it means a few years from now, browsers might be on the tech edge rather than on the tech bottom.

The new version has some pretty cool features. I'll give it another try. What's one more browser?

Netscape is NOT owned by AOL..Netscape is created by previous employee's of AOL...

Personally I have always liked The browser,(Firefox has taken the spotlight though!), I have been using it since 3.0 and am up to 7.1.
I'll have to go see what 8.0 is all about!

Indeed AOL bought Netscape in 1998. AOL "merged" with Time Warner in 2000 to become AOL Time Warner. In 2003, the company corporate name droped the AOL part to just become revert back to Time Warner.
So, in short, Netscape is owned by Time Warner. The AOL company doesn't really exist anymore.

I'm trying out Netscape 8. Its far superior to all previous version of netscape and I've tried them all. Firefox is still my main browser and I use IE6 for checking my msn and hotmail account, as well as the only browser you can use to get the latest XP updates is IE. I finally learned how to use Outlook to check my regular mail as well as hotmail and msn. So now I'm no longer tied to IE. If Netscape alows the eariler extensions from Firefox to be usable then I may actually switch to Netscape as my default browser. You really need to use a browser for a couple of weeks at least in order to fairly evaulate it. So far I'm very impressed by Netscape 8.
Another short aside is that if you use Gmail, Netscape 8 ties in to gmail seamlessly and Gmail is fantastic.

Netscape has always carried around a lot of unneccessary bloat compared to the 'Fox. However, there is one thing that struck my eye: the Fusion default skin. It seems to skin the title bar instead of just the inside. It's a trick, but a cool one.

Unfortunately your correct Pax..Netscape was sold to AOL and then it and AOL merged with Time Warner..along with quite a few other companies..

Well, I guess I was in "denial" how could something so cool ever be owned by AOL???..LoL.. Fortunatley they havent yet figured out how to completely screw it up like they have done to their very own program...

Netscape has been a very cool browser for as long as I can remember..a little slow..and yes, very "full" of stuff..but still cool..it is hard to believe AOL had their grubby hands anywhere near it!...

I am trying it out myself. The only thing I don't like so far is that I can't seem to set the tab broswing the way I want to. It keeps opening new windows in a tab... then again some sites (Like AOL.Music) makes you open up in a new tab reguardless of setting (it s part of the lik and it says 'tab' in it).

Other than that, I can check my GMAIL, go to MSN sites without worring about 'only works in IE', I got a little weather widget in the toolbar (not needed since I have DX3 and the Weather Channel program), and those multiple personal toolbars actually come in handy.

Plus my AOL IM is still intergrated into the browser and the password manager is a little better.

I think I might set Firefox to open Netscape when I need IE to render something. lol

I like the skin, but the window borders suck for me. These guys who developed the skin HAD to know about the skinning world and I think they could have done a little better than that wierd window border.

Well, I have been noticing something when it comes to Netscape 8.0 release that any of the videos that was on Yahoo Music has now been moved to AOL Music. It is also interesting that WinAmp seems to link up with many of those videos... and those web TV casts seem interesting too...
