What’s the worst thing an athlete can do?

Given my previous article on drug abuse by some athletes (Link) has gotten me thinking about this.

What is the worst thing an athlete can do? Would it be cheating, like drug enhancement abuse? Gambling on his teams or opponents? That would also be cheating, right? Not playing to his full potential, i.e. quitting before the game even begins?

I guess now that we’re thinking about athletes and their games. Why stop there? What about a regular person not involved in sports? What would be the worst thing a person could do that would really piss you off?

I’ve said already that I don’t like liars, or dishonesty in anyone and that would be the worst thing anyone could do to really make me mad at them for a while.

What else would you say is the worst thing an athlete can do, that would be as disappointing to you as a fan?

How about someone you know personally?

That definately would cheating Elie. Oh they certainly don't need the money, but somehow greed always comes into it.

For me, it's anything that's against their image.

Like Kobe Bryant being presented as the boy-next-door. Meanwhile, he allegedly rapes young women.

Also, lockouts. Seriously, these people make enough money (to echo Moderateman.) Play the game that you supposedly love and entertain people.

If it were someone I knew, it would be something as simple as not playing fair or reasonably. I don't like when people cheat or get all consumed with winning. It's a game, geez.

I remember that there was an issue a while ago of awarding the Stanley Cup to some other team outside the NHL, because it was originally intended to be awarded to the "best team in Canada," and was awarded every year except for 1919, when a flu outbreak infected the teams in the finals. A player had the audacity to say that it shouldn't be awarded to another team because "it should be awarded to the best team in the best league." F*CK YOU, TO BE A LEAGUE YOU NEED TO ACTUALLY PLAY A FEW F*CKING GAMES, MORON!!!

The NHL lockout is pure greed. There's (quiet) talk of an NBA one (it might've been in the local papers about a week ago.)

Outrageous salaries and the NBA lockout a couple years ago turned me off from the sport. It wasn't until the Pistons got really good (after Rick Carlisle left) that I finally began to like the game again. But I can't love it the way I did before.

Outrageous salaries and the NBA lockout a couple years ago turned me off from the sport.


I remember when this happened. Those salaries are high aren't they? But sometimes I wonder if they don't deserve it, ok, maybe not as large as some do get) but some athletes do lose life and/or limb playing the sports sometimes. I guess the high salary is somehow compensation. That's another way to look at it I guess!

A lot of other people work dangerous jobs and don't get paid millions of dollars. Firefighters lose life and limb. Policemen lose life and limb. I don't see them getting paid salaries even near what athletes get.

You're absolutely correct Latour. Who knows why the salaries for these athletes is so high and people who are firefighters and policemen get paid so little. I guess it's become such a natural part of society, what is expected and is now the norm. That's why a lot of people become athletes! I guess if one wants to get picky we could also look at other people who are paid extremely high salaries like CEOs, Presidents of Universities, Actors, Singers....the list would be endless!

cheating, no, consumed with winning, that's another thing.

When I play a game, ANY game, I play to win. Period. If you don't play within the rules, though, that isn't winning. So cheating's off bounds, IMO.

Playing to win is good, afterall that's why you would be playing right! I agree with you Gid, cheating is never good no matter how it's done!
