Sheila Copps Comes Out Against Martin on Flaggate

Sheila Copps find a new angle, tying Martin to scandal:

"'Realistically, Treasury Board would have discussed it, and he was the vice-chair of Treasury Board,' she said.

"The safeguards that would have prevented the misuse of public money resided at Treasury Board and at Finance, where Martin served as minister, she added."

As the less-than-well-informed comment that -- as Minister of Finance -- Paul Martin should have 'known where the money was', Copps makes an interesting point. Sure, Finance Ministers aren't literally in charge of the dispersal of funds, but they are involved in ensuring good, or not-so-good, government.

The other salient connection to Martin is, of course, that he has been a major player in the Québec Liberal organization for over a decade. As Chantal Hébert has covered, it's impossible to believe that Martin couldn't have known what was afoot in such a tightly knit circle.
