MOO2 like miniaturization of components possible?

One very good feature of MOO2 has been the miniaturization concept for the most items (not for fighters or antimissiles - grmpff) ) Is this possible in Galciv II too?

Example Miniballs 2 kost 10 tons per cannon to build in and if you go up the research tree, Miniballs 2 cost only 8 tons per cannon.

This leads to some very intreesting decisions. Should I integrate the new but expensive super cannon or should I stick to the older but cheaper one?

I have the idea the weapons we see in Beta 1 are simply conceptual, to prove out the concept of different weapon types and matching defenses - to see if they can make the multi-type weapon vs multi-type defense code work. Once they are satisfied with that, I suspect we will see some changes in weapon names and characteristic sizes, potencies, cost/bang, etc. This is all a typical approach for Stardock - Work the bugs out of the basics, then dress it up.

A very nice mod to Space Empires-IV called DarkNova-4 takes this concept in an excellent direction. The basic idea is one called "Mounts", which modifes the various ship componants:
* Premium Quality part; expensive but sleightly superior
* Low Quality part; half-price but sleightly bigger and prone to breakdowns and supply usage.
* Mini - expensive method of squeezing more of a part into a hull
With many mount variants, an almost continuous range is available in SEIV/DN4

Also, we do have a miniturization tech which will allow you to fit more on your ships.

But does it scale as you go up the tech tree Carielf?

In Beta 1, it seems to be a seperate tech, rather then the automatic refining (such as MoO uses). Of course, Beta1 is very early, so perhaps it is just a place holder?

I guess the main interest of going up the tech tree in a particular weapon field is having the possibility to have more firepower for a given room on a ship. If ships had an infinite room for equipment, one could build very powerfuls shipd by just adding an normous number of basic weapons. But ships have a limited room so with a given tech level, firepower is limited too. But with advanced techs, more powerful items become available. I suppose tere must be some kind of advantage in using advanded weapons instead of basic weapons, such as more compact items...
