WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush's chief of staff appealed on Sunday for congressional Democrats to work with the administration and Republicans rather than complain and stall action on Capitol Hill.
Andrew Card, appearing on three talk shows, also reaffirmed the president's support for House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, the Texas Republican whose ties to lobbyists have raised ethics questions, and John R. Bolton, the embattled nominee to be U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.
"We'd like to see more cooperation from the Democrats," Card said. "We have some serious problems in this country that must be addressed. We'd like to see the Democrats be part of the solution rather than just carp about the problem," he told "Fox News Sunday."
Asked whether Democrats were being obstructionists, Card said: "On some issues I think they are." He implored them to do more than simply play what he called partisan politics.

This one can be tossed into the "duh" category. The Democrats have shown that they have absolutely no intention of cooperating with the President and the GOP, even though their own Senate Minority Leader openly admitted that they (the Democrats) need a miracle if they want to hope of winning enough seats to win back the Senate. Instead, the Democrats seem only capable of stalling, and blocking judicial nominations if possible.

I agree whole heartedly with Mr. Card. Democrats in the Congress (House and Senate) must work with the President and the GOP to try to solve the problems that face the country. Letting things get worse is not the answer, even if they hope in doing so that citizens will hold Republicans accountable for the results.

as obtuse as he often appears to be, there's something i'd expect all politicians--even dubya-to understand: ya catch more flies with honey than vinegar.

The problem, is the Democrats have not said what that honey is. So far the only honey is no, no , not at all.

Please provide any ideas that the Democrats have made to fix the problem with SS. The last one that I heard was from the Senate Minority leader Sen. Reid back in 2000. First he stated that SS had to be fixed and that private accounts was the way.

I myself don't like the idea of private accounts being used as the primary system. But as voluntary addition, I have no problem (remember it was FDR that originally wanted this addition).

The question is, what other options do the Democrats have to fixing the base system?

As long as the Democrats just say NO, to everything just because Bush proposes it. They are rightly being labeled as the obstructionist party by the Republicans. The strange thing is that the Democrats want to be called "Progressive", when they are every thing but progressive.

Hell, Bush’s Progressive entitlement freeze system is something more out of the Democratic playbook then Republican. I am just shocked how hard the Dems are going to fight this when it champions their request to take more from the rich.

We'd like to see the Democrats be part of the solution rather than just carp about the problem," he told "Fox News Sunday."

Mistake number one for the Republicans, don't they know? Democrats don't watch FOX news. They will never hear about this request.

referring to the portion i quoted, it's clear to see what the honey isn't.

it's possibly more of a problem for those who do watch fox news.

much easier to blame fox news than the democratic party, which as of today seems to excell at one thing and one thing only.. obstructionism.

Democrats need to do more than just criticize the Bush policies. However Bush and his supporters in Congress need to do more than just dismiss Democratic suggestions. Two weeks ago a Democratic representative from Massachusetts attempted to add a provision to the energy bill that would mandate increase mileage for cars, trucks and SUVs in an effort to help reduce demand for oil. The Republicans promptly voted that down past the bill with no such provision and ignored the most effective way reducing the demand for oil and thus reducing the price and the energy problems we have in this country.

The Democrats have suggested moving the debate for Social Security to funding the existing system rather than making changes to the system. President Bush continues running around telling everybody that individual accounts are the answer when everyone knows, including the Social Security actuaries, that the individual accounts do-nothing fix the funding problem of Social Security and in fact make a solution more expensive. Thus unless the Republicans are going to take alternate suggestions seriously, nothing is going to happen.

Good link Kingbee. But here is another good link, to a write up another person has done. http://www.mydd.com/story/2005/2/22/173612/540

It does not matter to me who comes up with the origanial idea, just who pushes it forward. Right now Rep. Harold Ford (D) is the only supporter of that ulternative. But he is getting slapped down by Poliski for getting out of line. I really respect the man, and had hoped that he would of become the House minority leader, afew years back.

OK, then lets vote on it. I was against the Fillabuster back when the Republicans used it on the budget. IMO if anyone wants to us the Fillabuster, then they should at least stand up in front of everybody like they did in the old days and talk. If they are not willing to spend the time debating on the floor, then the fillabuster needs not be used.
