Nothing wierd about it at all, "Apple" was the code name of the project, the very first "Apple" made..which was pretty much just a circuit board that you had to build a case for yourself..LoL.
They kept the name and used other project codenames for future systems.

For example, XP was codenamed "Whisper"..

Hope this solves the mystery for you,
Zero.

Zero - XP was not code named "Whisper" - it was code named "Whistler".

Keep in mind that article is from the year 2000.

"i" before "e" except after "C", with the exception of; neither, leisurely, seized, either, weird, species.
