The New Food Pyramid

It's about time!

So finally, the USDA had decided to come up with more realistic guides to food for the benefit of Americans. There are now, 12, that's 12 food pyramids! Yep, I hear tell that these food pyramids are a lot more versatile and will fit anyone's dietary level.

I say good for them. I've downloaded the entire document, all 84 pages! It's in Adobe Acrobat format and will peruse at my own leisure to see what they've come up with.

I use to work in DOE, and one of my jobs was to create an electronic submission process for getting reimbursements for free and reduced priced lunches (ok, that was long!).  The kicker there was the money did not come from the Fed DOE, but from the Dept of Ag.

So I worked very closely with the School Nutrition people and learned to live, love and embrace the food pyramid.

NOW YOU ARE TELLING ME I HAVE TO LEARN 12 MORE!

How many "pyramids" does it take to say:

Eat more veggies; Fruit is good also, but remember it's loaded with sugar; Red Meat and Pork will get you the protein your need, but comes with a price called "fat". Fish and Poultry are great sources of protein, but make sure you cook them thoroughly (I had camphylobactor once, believe me, it's no fun!!); Anything with the word "processed", "precooked", "smoked", "cooks in a minute" or "microwaveable" on the label should be eaten sparingly; If it comes in a can, has a "flavor packet", or the average American kid wouldn't mind living on it, it's probably not fit for human consumption. ;~D

Heh, people are too dumb to eat right... either that or too lazy. I've dropped about 15-20lbs since Christmas just by adjusting my diet away from the "College Diet" (canned soup, microwaveable foods, ramen etc...) to actually eating real, regular food. Cereal and milk for breakfast, sometimes juice and a muffin. Nice salad for lunch, sometimes a good sandwich... dinner is often some sort of meat (steak, chicken) with some sort of green on the side. I don't snack much, don't drink much soda anymore... drink a ton of water (I'm up to a full litre already today).

I've lost weight without even exercising that much... I feel better, am healthier and have more energy. I did it all without consulting some dumb food pyramid. I don't understand why people need so many guidelines to eat properly. You can tell when you're not eating right just by the taste of the food.

I think this is just an issue of laziness.  And since it is a recommendation, not a law, I have no problems with it (other than having to learn 12 new ones - grummmblleee)

The 12 are all basically the same.  It just adjusts the portions (they now give recommended portion sizes) depending on how active/ overweight/ age etc. that you are.

I need one labeled: "hey fat ass, a Coke and a banana is *not* a recommended breakfast!"

I agree. It's just people being lazy in general. I do see a lot more people being proactive about their weight and lifestyles though. This is good. But still, some people just opt for the easy way out instead of doing it the better way, eat right and exercise!

Ha, ha. Karma, I totally understand. There are times when I didn't used to eat breakfast. I don't do that anymore. I find this helps a lot. And oh, not coke and banana, nice healthy breakfast!

I beleive that should read - hey large donkey, a carbonated caramel beverage and an elongated saffron tuber is contraindicated for a repast that terminates a short diet.

We must maintain political correctness after all.

God! If this is how we had to go around speaking to each other, there would be nothing much said! Talk about wordy and quite a mouthful!
