Windows Update?

Hi Folks,

I have a funny problem - well, it's not THAT funny.

I have WinXP SP2 installed and now that I set up my bootskin, desktop, etc. I'm not able to:
- go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com --> the page wouldn't load.
- change anything in my Windows User settings. --> e.g. if I click on "change user icon" a blank page loads
- my Norton SystemWorks Premier wouldn't let me do anything. E.g. I can't start AntiVirus to make a full system check. AntiVirus is still active thoungh.

The strange thing is that it all seems to be the same prob. All apps give me a blank page or do not react.
Since this all occured AFTER I installed WindowBlinds, IconPackager and BootSkin I tend to belive it's got something to do with those apps (before it was all fine!).

The 'not so funny thing' is, that all the progs that refuse to work properly are essential to my computer security and user settings!
I don't belive this is a troyan or virus prob, since my AntiVirus is up to date and I run a firewall (which doesn't refuse to work ).
But hey - who can be shure with that?

Has anyone had the same prob or is able to help me on this one?

Cheers!

apache0815,

It sounds like a script issue to me, though I am not an expert on scripting by any means.

Here is a link to the MS Script ("scripten.exe") file Link

I recommend downloading it, disconnecting from the internet, right-click file > scan for viruses (it is from Microsoft site so this is just to set your mind at ease) > disable your AntiVirus > double-click file to install the MS Script > reboot computer > enable AntiVirus.

Again, I offer this as a possible fix based on limited knowledge of your system.

In my opinion, WindowBlinds, IconPackager, and ObjectDock (free or Plus) would not create this issue - I have used them extensively, and have not seen script problems or blank pages on my machine. I do not use Bootskin, because I like to see my boot options.

I hope this helps.

Sorry, I can't help you out but I just wanted to add that I'm having the exact same problem. No MS Update, No User Accounts Page, No Search, No Help and Support pages. I uninstalled Window Blinds but it didn't help. Hope someone out there has the answer.

Hey ... This problem was really bugging me so I hunted around all morning and finally found the fix.

First, let me say, I'm not so sure the problem was caused by any Stardock software. I notice that I was also hit with a MS WIN XP update yesterday and that very well may have been the culprit.

Now for the fix ...

Download Windows Script 5.6 from:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=c717d943-7e4b-4622-86eb-95a22b832caa&DisplayLang=en

Run "scripten.exe" and then reboot.

I just did this and it worked ... Everything is back and running smoothly.

Hope it works for you as well.

This sounds like a scripting issue to me, RedBuzzard posted thread about it some time ago. Read it and the solution to it here: https://www.wincustomize.com/articles.aspx?SID=1&AID=66400&c=1#518548
