.12 Beta report

.12 loaded and a few thoughts.

Really like the config program.
Framerates have really gone up for me. Where I had 65-70 before I now have 90+.

Love the new moon graphics. Couple ideas:
1) How about habital moons or ability to mine moons for minerals or something? So maybe you have a gas giant with 0 tiles but maybe that little moon is Endor and has 5 squares.
2) Really cool effect would have the rings rotate like the moons do.

Problem: I had my survey ship on auto. I saved the game and exited. I loaded and now no matter what direction I try to move it I get a message that says it's out of range and needs to get to friendly space. Well, it won't go anywhere.

I agree, the moons and rings should definatly have some sort of effect on the game, and not just be something pretty to look at.

There are several ideas on the table right now, so we'll see what emerges as the one we'll use.

As for the rings rotating, we actually had that in before the Beta, but there was some shadow flickering (you'll notice the planet casts a shadow on the ring) so we took it out.  For some reason ideas that are good on paper jsut don't look how you'd expect

The "range upon loading" problem will definatly be top on our priority list...several other players have had this problem.

Thanks for the great feedback, and keep the suggestions coming...hopefully you'll update the game one week and see one of your ideas in the game

Moon bases or mining would be really cool.

Thanks Boogie!

As for moon bases. I could see a couple ways to do it off the top of my head.
For any planet with a colony on there *and* that has a moon that is rocky, perhaps a +xx% bonus to production which would simulate a "mining bonus".

If the moon is habitable you could go as simple as adding X amount of workable tiles to the colony *or* you could have a small extra tile section on the colony screen for it's satellite (no more then 6 tiles perhaps). You could then build on those tiles just like the planet itself but at an increased cost. This would even work for the "rocky" senario above. Perhaps 1-3 tiles that you can only build mining/production/factory facilities on and they have a bonus.
I guess if the planet has 0 tiles that would be harder to do but I'm sure you can come up with something.

Game balance might be an issue though I guess if you get lucky and get a class 13 planet with a class 6 moon. But then it was that way in GalCiv 1 in that in each galaxy there were usually a couple class 25+ planets out there but only a couple civs would actually get it.

So you could have only a class 2 planet but it also has a class 5 moon giving 7 total. Would cost a lot more to build stuff since the moon would cost more to build on but it makes that class2 a lot more appealing to colonize.

Whoohooo for Gal Civ 2!!
