Lot of name calling going on here considering DeLay hasn't been convicted of anything to my knowledge.
Has he bee convicted of breaking any law? Because if not, then it's pretty premature to be making a fuss about it. Particularly given your silence on people like Harry Reid whose actions are vastly more problematic than anything DeLay is accused of. Hilary Clinton, for instance, received an 8 million dollar advance for her book while a member of the senate. There was no possible justification for that kind of advance. Newt Gingrich, by constrast, was forced out for a much more modest book advance.
If DeLay is convicted for some wrong doing then it would be time to discuss what to do. But I don't see any reason why the Republicans should be tossing out leaders simply because they're accused of things. Especially when "the other side" has the lion's share of corruption riding on them. If I thought canning DeLay would somehow shame Democrats to behave more honorably and more ethically then I'd be the first to call for his removal.
The Republicans have learned - the hard way - that two standards of ethical behavior exist. Every time there's an effective Republican in congress, the Democrats blow up some thing out of proportion and then their goons in the media parrot it to try to "shame" the Republicans to kick them out. The tactic worked with Newt Gingrich. And when the Democrats faced an identical scenario (Hilary Clinton's $8 million book advance) there was nary a peep about it.
We see the same thing now. So DeLay put his wife and kid on the payroll and paid them arguably ridiculously high salaries. So what? Other than upsetting the "I hate rich people" folks, what exactly is the problem? Campaign contributions aren't tax payer money. It's money paid by people who want him to be there. If they don't like how he uses the money, that's their business. The situation might make me less inclined to contribute to his campaign if I were a contributor (i.e. he obviously has enough money if he can do that). But I don't see it as grounds to kick him out.
And yet at the very same time you have real REAL corruption with Harry Reid and plenty of others in congress that seems to get ignored. And it's hard to take Democrats seriously on this issue given the behavior of Clinton.
