A couple of observations

Things I think need some work

I noticed that when I try to save a game the dialog for overwriting an existing save is not visible until I back out of save and the menu all the way back to the game. Then the dialog asking if I want to overwrite an existing save game is there.

When I first colonize a planet I would like to have an option of going to that planet to set my build queue. Maybe another button on the dialog that allows me to set it's name.

When I am building facilities on a planet I find that any yellow areas (soil enhancement only) often get selected before the green ones. Of course I can just select a green tile and then select what to build but then the yellow tile is again selected next, so I usually just build Soil Enhancement and move it to the bottom of the queue when I am done. However, when moving items in the queue I find that, if the list is long, it pops me back to the top of the list instead of showing me the position of the item I am currently moving.

When a planet builds a facility I get a drop-down icon showing it, which is great. Right clicking removes the icon now which is also great. However I often get a second icon for the same build on the next turn which is not as great.

I have not been able to get the game to run for more than about 30 turns so far. It always crashes to desktop then or earlier.

I would also like to add to the observations.

* When a user clicks on the Planet in the planet display at the bottom of the main map screen, the Planet Management window should open up, set to that planet.

I lose my turn button before I get anywhere near 30 turns.

same here on the P4 machine anyway.

Can't say this is gonna be a short beta since some things definitely need fixing and im not talking about the UI for once (a common subject for improvement on all beta tests I was in previously)

Stardock's Beta 1 can be compared to other's Alphas. Stardock starts "Beta" testing well before most other companies do. So no, I don't think they're aiming for a short beta.

The beta is expected to be at least 9 month long. See the first post of Brad in the thread about beta schedule https://www.galciv2.com/Forums.aspx?ForumID=162&AID=64347

Honestly, this is a really good BETA considering it just started. I have BETA'd many games from World of Worcraft to Guild Wars and none has been so responsive and as interactive as this one. Stardock rox!

We definitely benefit from the fact that the test community is pretty small. It's nice to have direct access to the dev team when we have questions or issues, makes me feel like I actually have some impact on how the game shapes up
