Colonizing causing game crash

Having a little issue with this message board, sorry if this turns into a double post, but here goes....
I just got Galactic Civ and downloaded Altarian prophecy. All that went fine. I played with the map editor, and modified a map. Got the map to load just fine. Now, when I play the game, everything goes ok. Untill I have a colony ship colonize a planet. I have a 50/50 chance that the game will lock up, forcing me to press ALT-CTL-DEL to end task. I play with a P4 3.0 system, with all up-to-date drivers, DirectX 9. This is a dedicated gameing machine, I only have Everquest, Sacred, and now GC on it. I do use NSW2004 for antivirus. I keep this machine very clean, and lean. I do all may RL stuff with this machine (2nd one). Is this just a normal bug/problem with AP? The game looks very cool, but having to set auto-save to every 3 turns is kinda extreme
