Fatal Game error.

I just downloaded the game from stardock. I have version .11b[b].002. I will try to run the game, and it will boot up fine. However, when i get inside, the game only has a "load game" option as clickable. when i click on it, no games show up. Either this, or the game will simply crash to the desktop after a few seconds. Here's the machine i am playing on:

Intel pEntium 4, 1.70 GigHertz processor
Nnivida GeForce2 MX/MX400,

"Load game" is the only option you see? You should also see "new game" and "exit" and they should both be clickable. Only the "continue game" should be not clickable. Have you checked the debug file (in the galciv2 directory) for other clues?

Bigrobg, you should download smartException, run it, and send the associated report, as well as the debug.err file located in the Galciv II directory to Stardock.
By the way, saving game and loading game shouldn't work in the latest beta.

And don't forget to get the latest drivers for you graphical card.

BigrobG,
as peace phoenix said, that sounds like an old video driver problem. You need to download the latest drivers from www.nvidia.com. When you post in future you should cut and paste the debug.err file from the galciv2 directory. This not only contains all the system specs but details of what the game was doing at the time. Downloading and running smart exception from Stardock Central also creates a second file (a .CRA file in the smartexception directory), which yuo should also include with any crash reports.

Hope new drivers fix your problem,

Paul.

oh, and i got my video drovers a month ago. Could they be old already, or is it just my video card?

Check the video data in the debug file in your galciv2 directory and see if it matches with the date and version of the video driver you installed. If it does not match then probably you did not quite complete the installation procedure for your video driver.

Well I do believe nVIDIA actually released an update since then but then again alot of beta detonator drivers leak around so its hard to tell. Mostly though I think its the 4 AM here thats getting to me so ill stay outta details. Yup the bug reports are REALLY important for this beta phase so definitely find the debug file and send it also your posted specs were ehhh

O/S - Windows XP
CPU - PIII 500mhz
Video - (will be a Voodoo 5 5500 when I finally shut this hunk of junk down)
RAM - 384MB
Directx - 9.0c

This PC was given to me for free and is a gateway I use it for alot of things and the Voodoo will make the beta alot more interesting for me cause im curious how it would run (guessing not very good but I did get results with DOOM 3 oddly enough).

The debug.err file is in the root directory of your GalCiv 2 install. SmartException may be downloaded from Link

Nvidia released new drivers just a couple of weeks ago.

There was a version of NVidia drivers that stripped out support for DirectX 9.0c in Geforce 2 cards so you may want to check the release notes to see if they mention anything like that.  It still works on my Geforce2 Ultra with the latest drivers, though.  Also, when you update your drivers, you almost always want to uninstall the existing drivers, reboot, and then install the new drivers.  If you've already installed your new drivers over the old ones, you may want to try un-installing them, rebooting, and re-installing them.
