Application alert animations- WAY too many resources.

I find it really annoying to be playing a game, then someone IMs me, causing the alert animation in AIM to go off. The problem is, the animations seem to take up 20-60% of my CPU time while playing the game, forcing me to alt-tab out.

Is there any way to actually turn off the animations or at the very least reduce the amount of resources they use?
