My Galactic Civilizations II - Feedback

Beta Version = 0.11b[b].002

In no particular order…

- General Game Bug 040105
Sometimes the current events will not advertise a planet improvement until a turn “after” it is completed.

- Ship Design Suggestion 040105
There needs to be a “lock” button for each stage of ship design to prevent accidental disassembly of the already placed parts… it gets kind of frustrating accidentally pulling off a hull structure piece, moments from finishing and having to redo things… (It happens often).

- Ship Design Bug 040105
Playing some races and selecting ship design, initially shows the human hull designs… Selecting any other tab, and then returning to the hull types seems to show a completely different set of hull designs. These different designs are the same designs for any race that has this issue. Some races have no hull designs after the tab change! And some races I couldn’t check due to crashes.

Races with the same Hull Designs regardless of tab change:
Humans
Altarians - Able to recreate trouble
Arceans - Able to recreate trouble

Races with different Hull designs after tab change:
Yor - Able to recreate trouble
Drengins - Able to randomly recreate trouble
Torian Confederation - Able to recreate trouble
Drath - Unable to recreate do to crashes

Races with blank hull design tabs after tab change:
Korx - Able to recreate trouble

Races unable to test due to crashes upon selection:
Drath - I managed to get them to load up once, but then crashes prevented from re-creating trouble.
Thalan - Crashed
Iconian - Crashed

- General Game Bug 040105
Retiring from a game, and re-starting one regardless of race chosen causes a game crash every time. Work around is simply quitting to desktop and re-starting the program.

- Ship Design Suggestion 040105
Add a “BACK” button to the ship design screen…. Having to “DONE” out to the main map and re-select ship design is a bit annoying.

- Planet Details Suggestion 040105
Add further detail to planet tile resource bonuses.

- Ship Design Bug 040105
The side scroll tab buttons for the already placed items list in the ship design screen, don’t work.

- Ship Design Bug 040105
Selecting a piece to place on the ship hull during ship design and then clicking anywhere in the placement window causes the piece to disappear and be un-selectable or placeable until you select a different piece and re-select the first one. Or closing out the ship design screen and re-entering it.

- Ship Design Suggestion 040105
Show the sensor range of a ship or ship design in the ship port screen and the ship design screen. Currently the only way I have been able to check a ships sensor range is after the ship is built in the main map. This can be frustrating with multiple ship types based on sensor range… such as sensor drones!

- Ship Design Suggestion 040105
Show the details of adding a specialized module to a ship design in the module description. Such as how many colonists can be transported with each colony module… etc…

- Ship Design Suggestion 040105
If you are going to show the colony port currently selected in the Star Port screen, maybe adding the ability to tab through the available spar ports from that screen would make quick inventory of star ports much easier. Maybe even adding a small nearly transparent overlay in the planet window listing total empire star ports, and how many are currently in use (building something).

- Ship Design Suggestion 040105
Add a small, almost transparent, readout in the corner of the ship view, in the ship design screen, that lists the missing essentials for the ship. Such as Engines, Sensors, and Support that disappear when filled. (Only as a reminder). Some people can get carried away and forget to place a crucial module and complete the ship, only to have to redo it when they discover their oversight. This will help prevent that frustration. I do not, however, advocate requiring essential modules to complete a design… If a player wants to build a ship with no sensors, or support, or whatever, then they should be able to.

Sorry... I just now read the beta schedule... *kicks himself*

https://www.galciv2.com/Forums.aspx?ForumID=162&AID=64347

Is it just me, or is the information in the beta schedule, contradicted in the beta notes post??

https://www.galciv2.com/Forums.aspx?ForumID=274&AID=69795#545606

Until this is clarified I guess I will continue commenting on whatever I find.

I think the Beta Schedule refers to what you should expect to see us prioritize.  You can comment on any aspect of the game, just don't start a flame war if the spelling of some obscure message text dosen't get changed immediatly

But yes, we are organizing all suggestions, and will probably get to most sooner than expected, but in most cases, crashes and system compatability issues will top our list.

And Thanks for the great feedback!  I definatly aggree with the "Lock Components" feature...I've had that problem my fair share of times, too

Thanks for the clerification!

I will continue commenting on anything that catches my eye.

- General Game Bug/Suggestion 040305
Racial portraits for dialog boxes in the main map appear to be sandwiched, or squished.

- Ship Design Bug 040305
Upgrading the default colony ship shows the item break down as having already filled 81 of 30 slots!! Medium hulls have 30 slots… However, the “Cargo” size hull is highlighted, which has 90 slots…

- Domestic Policy Bug 040305
The Domestic Policy screen research spending distribution rate can not be locked…

- General UI Suggestion 040305
When a colony is selected, please show the current colony improvement being built somewhere in the UI. Preferably next to the current ship construction spot… Currently the only way to check is accessing the colony. I understand that the colony summery screen is not implemented yet, but the more info presented “cleanly” in the main map UI the better.
Also, please have a spot showing the current research topic, and time left till completion, somewhere in the main map UI… having to constantly access the research page just to see the progress of the current topic is monotonous.

- General Game Bug 040305
When selecting a planet on the main map, showing its details, and then clicking somewhere in blank space replaces the details with a history graph… However, the planet previously selected remains highlighted, and can not be accessed until a different planet is selected first.

- General Game Suggestion 040305
Allow a right click in blank space to center the camera on the location of the click…

- Apparent General Game Bug 040305
Setting all the galaxy option sliders to “rare” seems to have a positive result, rather then a negative one… Resulting in “more” of everything instead of less… or maybe the sliders doesn’t actually work yet??

- General Game Suggestion 040305
Moons don’t seem to have any significance to the value of a planet… I suggest granting tech tree options that allow a colony with a moon to utilize the moon in some way… Some examples would be:
*Moon harvesting stations placeable in colony tiles.
*Moon star ports, allowing for bigger ships to be constructed?
*Moon based entertainment boosting colony approval?

The idea is to give planets with moons strategic value rather then just pretty scenery.

Can we get a screenshot of this please?

Allow a right click in blank space to center the camera on the location of the click…

Can't use right click. Right click is for moving ships on autopilot. Also, I'm confused why you can't use left mouse button dragging, or edge scrolling, or the minimap to get it to view the way you want it.

- The sandwich effect is very slight… Only really noticeable when you look at the portraits from the race selection and then immediately see a portrait at the beginning turn, usually in gibberish requiring a universal translator. I am not sure how to host pictures or I would give an example screen shot.

Can't use right click. Right click is for moving ships on autopilot. Also, I'm confused why you can't use left mouse button dragging, or edge scrolling, or the minimap to get it to view the way you want it.

- I understand that the right click currently sets auto pilot for selected ships but otherwise could the right click be defaulted to centering the camera unless a ship is selected? That way small camera adjustments can be made in a split second by simply right clicking in the galaxy map rather then scrolling from the sides, or using the mini map… Added up over a several hour game session, the time used to simply scroll the camera can be cumbersome, not to mention the “fatigue” it will save on mouse users wrists…
When it comes to UI’s, little “polish” things like this can make a huge difference… The easier minor camera adjustments are to make, the better people will feel about the UI as a whole.

The habitable planets and the star density spinners are hooked up. The other ones aren't.

- Ah, that makes sense then… Thanks.

General Game Suggestion 040505 (big suggestion)

IGBM’s Idea:

This suggestion is rather large change to the theatre of conflict in the game… If not in the original launch, then perhaps in an expansion pack.

In one word (or acronym) what I suggest is the implementation of IGBM’s.

Inter-Galactic-Ballistic-Missiles. (Galaxy spanning versions of existing ICBM’s, or Inter-Continental-Ballistic-Missiles.) I realize that it would be more correct to use IPBM (Planetary) instead of IGBM (Galactic) but IGBM just sounds better.

In a nutshell, I am suggesting the implementation of a fully configurable IGBM interface, utilizing the already existing Ship Design scheme, and adding an entirely new dynamic to GC2. One that no other 4X space game has capitalized on.

Think of a theatre of conflict where next to the fleet of destroyers, transports, and defenders, you will have ECM (Electronic-Counter-Measure) frigates, stations, and even Anti-IGBM weapons like the 1980’s “star-wars” program, that defend fleets and colonies from IGBM’s. Entire empires could enter a cold war or sorts… The promise of mutually assured destruction threatening at every turn.

No longer would the theatre of conflict be dominated by the empire with the largest armada… When a single well placed IGBM (of sufficient size) could conceivably wipe out the entire armada in one fatal sloop, it will be the “thinking” person’s war to win. War makers on all sides will be forced to implement tactics, such as attacking in waves, considering reinforcements and defense, and adding verity to their fleets instead of all out offensives.

With the right implementation, the inclusion of IGBM’s could bring a long needed change to the 4X scene.

Functional Concept (parameters):

IGBM’s will first require a significant investment in technology and capital… Obviously Weapon, Computer, and Navigation technologies would play a big part. The technology should be easy to use, hard to master… Available early, but late to mature… There should be varying sizes to IGBM’s that allow for a multitude of configurations. The earliest versions will obviously have limited stats all around. But with further advancement in IGBM technology, they can attack farther, faster, and deadlier. Allowing for both physical and technical customization, like the current ship design philosophy that exists in the game will work well, and encourage diversity in appearances and tactics.

The development of IGBM technology should be expensive enough that it intrudes on the development of other equally desirable technologies. Such as those that unlock new hull types, and the like. The idea is that no empire should have both well developed armadas, “and” well developed IGBM’s until extremely late in the game… if ever. Thus encouraging a “blend” of the two. Lastly, the “use” of IGBM’s should also, undoubtedly, cost at least one colony tile to the construction of an IGBM launching platform. The platform should also require upgrading in order to launch the ever larger IGBM’s technology advances allow.

Defense from IGBM’s should be comparatively cheap in the beginning, and available within the general mix of technologies. No specialization required. Until later in the game, when whole technology fields can be devoted to Anti-IGBM pursuits. The idea is that even if an empire rushes to IGBM use, anyone with a little forethought and a little planning can protect themselves relatively easy from them. Meanwhile the empire that has spent all that time and effort on an easily counteracted IGBM stockpile has a significantly reduced “ship” based army. And thus as a distinct disadvantage. This way the game doesn’t degrade into an early IGBM race.

Implementation Possibilities:

- Variable sized IGBM’s.
Such as Small, Medium, and Large. Small IGBM’s are the first available and have relatively small specifications. Due to the limited size, the designer must choose to focus on payload, range, speed, ECCM (Electronic-Counter*-Counter**-Measures), armor, specials, etc… The larger the IGBM hull type, the more well rounded, or specialized they can be.

Example #1: Someone may want an IGBM design that is very fast, short ranged, has little to no defense, and medium payload. This design would be nice for short range, colony defense. An enemy armada enters empire territory, and before they know what happened the colony launches an IGBM that hits the same round it was fired. Preventing the armada from attempting to shoot it down, or hijack it.

Example #2: Someone may want a deep penetration IGBM that is slow, but long ranged, has minimum defenses, and a medium payload. This design would be nice for covert, long range, sabotage attacks. Possibly even allowing the attacker to designate a target… If they have a spy in the colony. Etc…

- Variable Effect IGBM Payloads.
Such as EMP, Thermal, Biological, Explosive, Chemical…. Each effect will have its drawbacks, and its benefits. EMP type payloads will disable technology, but not destroy it… Such as incapacitating ships to be captured… Or disabling planetary defenses long enough for an invasion force to land. An explosive payload will be very useful against colonies, but not very useful against targets in space, due to its reliance on an explosive shockwave; as apposed to a thermal payload that would do equally well in space or colony but do less over all damage to both. Conversely a biological payload would have virtually no effect against targets in pace… Etc…
With this dynamic an empire stock piling IGBM’s will have to invest as much time and effort designing and planning for them as they would ships…

- Variable Infrastructures.
Requiring the building of different colony tiles, or space station expansions, for different payload types. Such as requiring a Biological Research Facility be build in a colony in order to arm IGBM’s made there with biological payloads. Etc…

I could go on and on but I will stop there and await any feedback… No point in taking it to the N’th degree if there is no hope for its implementation.

Hope you like the idea at any rate.

IGBMs would seriously unbalance the game IMO. A race would need only to spend their time building a set of missles to the exclusion of everything else. Have a set of short-range ones to toss at any fleet that comes within striking distance of your planet and you're pretty safe. Late in the game, you send out your swarm of missles to take out all enemy planets relatively near your core empire. It also doesn't really add much to the strategy aspect of the game. The whole Mutually Assured Destruction thing doesn't keep people in check in a game. Their citizens are just numbers, they themselves stand to lose nothing aside from however much time has passed since they hit "save"

While I'm sure there's a way to incorporate something like this within the carefully controlled confines of a campaign/scenario, I think it would just be too unbalancing in a free-for-all skirmish, and would break down even further when multiplayer is added.

Zoomba... I don't mean to be rude... But every one of the points you have made I addressed. If after re-analyzing my post, you still have concerns. Feel free to ask me direct questions that I can answer and I will be more then happy to.

Thanks.
I actually don't feel you addressed those points. You say make them expensive, but once someone ends up with the uber IGBM stuff and just starts cranking them out, the game is over. Unless the defenses completely negate them. If that's the case, there is no benefit or reason to get the missiles. I'll just equip every ship with a scrambler, place one scrambler building on every planet... there... safe. I'll now go out and stomp them with my armada which is 10 times better equipped.

There would need to be other protections in place to limit their use. A perfect defense item negates their benefit, an imperfect defense means they become the cheese attack late in the game. Something else needs to be added to keep players from using them to obliterate the galaxy. One possibility would be that every time you use one, your influence in every control sector goes down by 25%. This would result in you running the risk of losing your outlying planets to enemy empires. Even your core worlds are weakened and you may lose the election in the senate next time around. Use of such weapons should be highly limited/punished. In Rise of Nations, launching 10 nukes (total among all players) ended the campaign, period... end of the world.

Ultra-weapons are a tough thing to balance, and add little to the overall strategy in the game from my experience.
First, you are making several assumptions that are incorrect... Why you have made them instead of asking me for details first, I think, has to do more with the fact that you have some bad experiences in other games that have done it wrong in the past, and because of that you are unwilling to even consider the idea in the present.

Second, instead of assuming that the idea will fail outright, and write yet another vague bitter reply about it, try asking me how I suggest fixing the issues you think will arise and see if you agree...

Once again, I have already addressed your concerns in my original idea. If you want clarification then ask for it instead of trying to battle me with assumptions that are unfounded.

P.S.
Ultra-weapons are a tough thing to balance, and add little to the overall strategy in the game from my experience.

Where do you see me describe IGBM’s as “Ultra-Weapons”??
Empty your head of this assumption and then re-consider my original post please. Then, if you have questions, feel free to “ask” them.
Now that I have time I will take Zoomba’s queue as evidence that I need to clarify a few things before more people misunderstand what I am suggesting IGBM’s be in GC2, as opposed to how other games may have done it… and done it “wrong”.

What IGBM’s would “NOT” be:

- IGBM’s would not be “Ultra-Weapons”, “Uber-Weapons”, “Super-Weapons”, or in any way the most powerful weapon in the game… They would only be the “other arm” of a well planned military strategy. A wildcard of sorts that will force an opponent to keep an eye on resources they believe to be “protected” from an opponent.

- IGBM’s would never be an adequate replacement for ships… EVER. However, this is not to say that IGBM’s won’t be more useful then ships, when used in some strategic war scenarios.

- IGBM’s would not be producible any faster then a comparable ship… Building a tiny IGBM, should require a comparable investment in time and resources as a tiny ship would. The trick is that once the IGBM is used, it is “gone”; unlike a ship that can be repaired and re-deployed. Thus any fear of “stockpiling” IGBM’s is as unfounded as a fear of someone stockpiling ships. If implemented as I envision them, an Empire that even tried to stockpile IGBM’s at the expense of its army would be little more then a sitting duck to an experienced invader.

What IGMB’s “would” be:

- IGBM’s would be, in a nutshell, the power of a ship expended in a one-time-use effect, and multiplied accordingly. Sometimes the effect of a single IGBM will be more useful then a small fleet of ships… When used against an opponent, a few well placed IGBM’s can potentially take the legs out from under a superior army.

- IGBM’s would be a very useful way of providing a “last-strike” initiative in an unraveling war campaign. Providing a well planned, well timed, attack to catch an otherwise superior opponent unprepared. Potentially allowing for even the most defeated of enemies to stage a miraculous come back.
*Note: It is one of my deepest disappointments in all 4X games to date that once an opponent was beaten to a certain degree, they stood little to no chance of “ever” re-gaining their imitative. If implemented correctly, IGBM’s could supply this wild card. Requiring even a superior empire to take lesser ones seriously.

To further explain the “vision” I have for IGBM’s I will try to detail an example of how I see them being used…

Example:
My empire is in shambles… Out of what was a 10 colony empire I now have 4 remaining, all within the same quadrant, protected by my last space station. My opponent has just decimated the last of my defense forces, and is about to destroy my station.

Because my opponent has already attacked two of my stations, he knows I am fond of area effect graviton wave emitters, that rattle ships to peaces unless they pack together; combining their masses to resist the waves that ripple out in all directions from my star base. After taking significant losses in previous sieges he decides to pack his remaining assault teams into one large armada with enough combined mass to effectively resist the weapons. After all, that station is the last thing standing in his way from annihilating me.

He takes the next few turns, gathering his forces into one square… Mean while, I see what he is doing and decide to quick sell several extremely valuable colony improvements to get the money to construct a large, single sector effect, antimatter payload IGBM by the end of next turn.

The next turn, I have my IGBM prepped and ready for launch, meanwhile he’s finished clustering all his ships together for the assault on my space station. Lucky me, he must not have noticed my actions, because he is still there, within 5 sectors of my launching colony, and barely within range of my IGBM.

I launch my IGBM straight into the sector he is massing his ships and watch the pretty graphics depict a purple colored nuclear like explosion engulf his armada… The casualty report is both exhilarating to me, and devastating to him, as the report indicates the explosion was powerful enough to take out just over 50% of his armada and heavily damage the rest. He no longer stands a chance against my station and immediately turns his ships around and heads back to his territory, giving me plenty of time to re-group and mount some form of counter attack.

Potential Defense #1:
If my opponent had merely paid attention, and seen what I was doing, he could have made one of several defensive decisions.

- He could have set some “buffer” ships around his armada to try and take the hit. To do so he would set ships around the armada, effectively boxing it in, and setting said ships to “Missile Defense” When an IGBM passes through or next to a sector with one or more ships set to “Missile Defense” there is a percentage chance that the ship will shoot the IGBM down. More ships are better. If the IGBM passes through the sector occupied by the ship there is a higher chance it will be shot down. With technological advances, this “Missile Defense” rating can be boosted passively. In return I could have plated the IGBM with armor and reduced the likelihood it would be shot down. But did not.

- He could have deployed “IGBM Drones” nearby that do nothing but seek and destroy IGBM’s. They try to shoot down an IGBM that passes by within “X” sectors, and boost the “Missile Defense” rating of any ship within “X” sectors by a flat amount; depending on the drones sensor strength. In return, I could have outfitted my IGBM with counter measures (ECCM), reducing that chance, but in this case I did not as I wanted the biggest BANG possible.

- He could have grouped some ECM Ships with his armada. Each ECM (Electronic Counter Measure) ship would have granted all ships in the stack a bonus against the effect of an IGBM.

Etc…

Keep in mind, that this was the result of “one” IGBM outfitted for maximum payload, and used against an unprepared target… If the target had any countermeasures in place, the odds of that single IGBM even making it to the target would have been slim, if not impossible. The trick is to make your opponent vulnerable to a well placed IGBM… And to do that you will need ships of your own. Or a completely un-prepared opponent. Thus an empire focusing too heavily on IGBM’s will lack the ability to effectively use them! As well as be a sitting duck to any attacker that takes necessary precautions.

Such a scenario can also be used to detail why an all out massive assault, with no tactics, can fail against a smart defender that uses IGBM’s effectively. But a smart assault, taking IGBM’s into account, can bring much needed depth to the “strategy” of 4X games.

As I read the IGBM proposal, it may (and perharps should) be used as a way to counter a fleet. I am not sure that fleet combats are currently implemented, but if the betas show that fleets are too powerful, a way to counter them could be to have missiles that do damage to all ships in the fleet.
Currently, there are 3 weapons associated with 3 armors. The rationnal behind that I see, is to have a way to counter an ennemy that rely heavily on one weapon and isn't protected against others, allowin a small ships to defeated/severely injure a bigger one.
Maybe for fleet combat we need to have a way to defeat/weaken big fleet that don't involve another big fleet.

BTW, the use of IGBM against planets may depend greatly about the size of galaxy, when IGBM are produced at one edge and are planned to be used against the other edge.

Your latest post did clear up a lot of my confusion, and does clear up my misconceptions on the matter. As the idea was written originally though it had all the markings of an end-game Ultra-weapon and I had trouble seeing how that design could be effectively balanced.

I like your idea on a number of points, and it has potential. However I still think there should be wider-galactic impacts to your empire for the use of a weapon of mass destruction such as that. Be it influence loss, deterioration of political relations as a result... whatever. Think of it as comparable to a nation today launching an ICBM against another.

Be careful to not take disagreement with your point personally. The beauty of forums is to be able to present an idea, have other people respond to it by agreeing, disagreeing, pointing out weak points etc. I posted my feedback and thoughts on the idea as you originally posted them, you responded by clarifying points, further fleshing out the concept and clearing up misconceptions. I came away with a better understanding of what you were really trying to say. My response to you was not bitter, it was an honest reaction to what had all the markings of an ultra-weapon based on my experiences with other strategy games.

IGBM’s would merely be an efficient means to an end… The same end that can be reached via other means, although less efficiently. Such as bombarding a colony from orbit. In a game that is supposed to simulate galactic conflict, I think it would be a mistake to burden those who peruse galactic conquest simply due to the “means” in which that conquest takes place. Unless, of course, the empire in question is being run by a pacifist government.

The only restrictions that IGBM’s should have in a game like GC2 are technological and industrial… Not moral. After all, Humans are only 1 of many races depicted… Who’s to say they would even share our sentiment about using such weapons?

The trick is to not discount a potential evolution in game play because of some moral hang up one may have in real life… In the past, I am sure that many development studios intentionally left out certain forms of weapons in an attempt to avoid criticism. But in a time where the average gamers age is something like 24, and one of the most popular games in the industry is GTA San Andreas, it would be silly to do so now.

I understand completely. However in the future you would do yourself a favor if, instead of making vague comments about the “impression” you get from a suggestion, you asked specific questions that would get you specific answers instead. It is hard not to adopt an argumentative tone when addressing such comments. However, I am glad I could clarify my concept without further misunderstanding.

These are from notes of beta 1. I have not had time to test beta 2 much yet.

- General UI Ergonomics Suggestion 040605
The UI needs a few slight adjustments to lessen the distance the mouse needs to travel for often repeated tasks. After only a few hours of testing my wrist begins to feel it….

1 – Please move the news items so they drop down from the right hand side of the screen and not the left. This way the lowest item is very close to the [DONE] button on any screen the item opens. As it exists now, you click the next turn button on the far right, you need to then mouse over to the far left, click the news item, scroll all the way over to the far right again to exit that screen, then mouse over to the far left again to access the next news item… rinse and repeat sometimes a half dozen times or more every single turn, and you quickly have a player suffering from carpel tunnel syndrome….

2 – Allow the ESC key to exit from any screen currently up, directly to the main galaxy map.

3 – Allow the news items to expire if not checked after a few turns… As it exists now, if you don’t check them they pile up infinitely.

- General Game Bug 040605
The main galaxy map UI will often not update after a passed turn until it is interacted with in some way. Reproducible most of the time by simply clicking next turn, and immediately taking you hand off the mouse. Notice that the treasury does not update and the next turn button disappears… Then click the mouse anywhere and the UI updates.
Note: This might have been fixed in beta 2… I have not tested it.

- Colony Detail Suggestion 040605
Allow the player to designate a colony tile as un-usable, maybe by a right click. Also adding a visual indication to it, like a red “X” or something would help. When the number of colonies begins to increase, any visual reference and ability to set a tile as un-usable so the auto tile select, while placing improvements quickly, skips it is nice.
