Virginia Gov. Mark Warner yesterday signed into law a measure that denies illegal aliens public benefits, including access to Medicaid, welfare and local health care services.
"I have signed this legislation into law but will ask the Latino Advisory Commission to study and monitor the legislation to ensure that it is fairly implemented and does not impose undue costs on local governments," said Mr. Warner, a Democrat who is in his last year in office.
Delegate David B. Albo, a sponsor of the measure, applauded the governor's decision.

Again, if more states would do this, perhaps it would slow down the influx of illegals that come into the country and take advantage of our systems.

(And before someone calls me a racist, I am not. I am not anti-immigration or anti-immigrant. I just want to see people that come to this country do it legally, within the system. I want them paying into social security, paying taxes, etc. If they need benefits, that's fine too, as long as they are here legally and worked within the system to come here.)

And the Northern Va countines, Fairfax and Arlington, as well as the City of Alexandria are trying to get out of it.

Excellent news!! It's about time we put the "illegal" back in "illegal alien"!!!

We have far too many law makers in this country who fall all over themselves trying to convince us that people who commit crimes aren't really criminals!!

And the Northern Va countines, Fairfax and Arlington, as well as the City of Alexandria are trying to get out of it.

Good, let them get out of it, but not receive any state or federal funding to reimburse them for those public benefits. Then we'll see how long their "compassion" lasts.

They are arguing that the state law infringes on the rights of the localities.  And in a way it does.  Except here is how it works in Va.

The Commonwealth cannot dictate to the localities how to spend THEIR money, so they could still spend THEIR money for the illegals.  However, no State Money (and it is a big chunk) can be spent on it, and if the Locals do not abide by the law, then the Commonwealth has the right to refuse to give them ANY state money for the programs.

That is what galls those localities.

(A Commonwealth, there are 5 of them, is different from a state in that each locallity is a soverign governing body and only a Constitutional Amendment can force them to toe the line.  But like the Feds, the Commonwealth gets around that by saying "if you want our money, you will follow our rules".)

Dr. Guy, don't get me wrong. I am all for the locality's right to spend their revenues as they see fit. I am also all for their right to become havens for illegal aliens, if that is what the taxpayers and commissioners of the counties want. They have every right to tell the Commonwealth of Virginia that they want to strike out on their own on this issue. However, with rights come responsibilities. If they want to strike out on their own, they should have to do it, on their own.

Well, you and a veto proof majority of both the senate and General Assembly of Virginia, and the Democrat Governor are all in agreement.

For the record, so am I.

Dunno why this is news. Immigrants, even LEGAL immigrants, have not been able to recieve federal benefits for some time now, I believe since Clinton passed (and took credit for, in spite of it being a Republican initiative) the Welfare Reform Act.

Then why do many immigrants -- especially illegal ones -- continue to receive benefits?!?!?
