Newbie question

Hello all.

I've a few questions:

Is it neccessary to switch from imperial government to something more democratic to survive on higher difficulty levels? I fint it quite problematic to survive at normal difficulty. When I try other government types than imperial I always end up with having to set my taxes to 0% and I may still not have enough support to keep control of the senate. Anyone have suggestions on what i am doing wrong? Do I need to research more crowd pleasing stuff, and build such things too? I generally don't build more than an entertainment center and maybe a news network. Also should I specialize on morale before i start the game? I generally like to specialize on HP, attack and defence, since I play a military game.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Build Moral improvements and spend some money in propaganda (planetary details)

You might want to consider building the following improvements, which increase your economy, your manufacturing capability, and also morale:

Soil enhancement
Banking center
Habitat improvement
Manufacturing center
Fusion power plant
Stadium
Stock market
Transporters
Antimatter power plant
Economic center

With those I rarely need to build any purely morale building projects. You can also just build a combat transport and take 5B people off, which improves bad morale. If you're playing a military game you'll eventually need the troops for an invasion anyway.
