Feedback on Main map

I didn't even try to play a full game in the first beta, but I played around with the main UI window. Here are some thoughts:

1) I love the zoom in/zoom out on the mouse scroll button. It's completely intuitive and works great for "that planet just to the left" moments. The transition to the strategic map is very slick.

2) I was a bit put off by the default (top down) camera view. The biggest problem is that you're looking down on the rings of ringed planets, and they kinda look like they're selected. I manually dragged the view to a standard Civ II-style isomorphic perspective, and found that things looked much better. Maybe this should be the default perspective? It's instantly familiar to anyone who plays TBS games.

3) I expected the view to scroll when I moved my mouse to the edges of the main map, similar to GC1. It was kind of tedious to click & drag when I wanted to shift the view.

4) I couldn't figure out how to cancel a ship's autopilot instructions. In GC1, clicking on the ship would cancel its orders (removing the blue "target" from the map).

5) I couldn't figure out how to make all shjps execute their autopilot instructions at the beginning of a turn. In GC1, the space bar would trigger this. It's very tedious to move all your ships one square at a time!

6) Finally, let me be a bit controversial by questioning the movable camera. What real gameplay benefit is this going to provide? It looks cool, but I found two ways that it made things VERY confusing.
- First, it's easy to get the mini-map and view oriented quite differently. If I see a star to the "north" of my ship on the main map, where do I click on the mini map to center on it? I guess the white selection in the minimap is supposed to clue you in on your perspective, but this didn't seem clear at all.
- Second, the movable camera obscures the fact that you're really moving your ships on a rectangular 2-D grid. There's no Z-movement in the game, right? And you can't move just anywhere, you must move to one of the 2-D grid squares. Since there's no visual grid on screen, from some perspectives it's really hard to figure out, e.g., where do I click to move diagonally.

Maybe these things get easier as you work with the game more, or maybe there's some gameplay benefit to the movable camera that I haven't experienced yet. But from my current perspective, I imagine I'd set the camera once to a Civ-II style perspective and never change it..

Anyhow, the game looks really good, and ran quite quickly on my system. I'm looking forward to playing it as the product matures over coming months.

F1-F3 shift to different isomorphic views.

As for the movable camera, I don't use it, but I can see your point to a degree. On the other hand, you can turn the grid on under options, which I did.

Didn't know about the grid option - I kind of figured that nothing on that screen was functional yet.

Thanks for the tip, it does make it clearer when you ought to click.

I tried the F1-F3 views, but didn't really like any of them - too close to the 2D plane for my tastes. I wound up settling on a view with the camera rotated about 60 degrees above the plane, and matched mini-map orientation to main-map orientation. I guess it'll take a while for both players and developers to figure out a good way to use the GC2 engine.

There has been ALOT of back and forth discussion on the camera in the office since we made the decision to go with a Diamond shaped Mini-Map.

There were actually default camera modes (using the function keys) that snapped to a more CivII, non Isometric style of play, but using the mini-map became very painful (imagine dragging the mini-map view left and the screen moving up...extremely disorienting)

This is why all the included camera Views are set to that isometric view, so when you orient youself with the mini-map, it directly matches the map.

As for the movable camera, we felt it was a nice polish point for players to go in and view their custom made ships, planets, and the rest of the galaxy, from any angle.

What I've suggested is that the camera has a "Snap-Back" mode that's on by default.  When you rotate the view around, the camera will always snap back to a view that is correctly oriented with the mini-map.  THis way you can view from all angles, but aren't forced to use a F1-4 key to re-orient yourself.

Snap-Back sounds great! If it is added in, it would be nice if it delayed a second or so before snapping back, giving you a chance to make another rotation.

Further comments:

- the minimap does not update with autopilot lines turned on. The original line is drawn but then never updates as your ships move turn after turn.

- If you shift all your production away from military, the time remaining to build something on the main screen becomes a huge number or -1 weeks. This needs to be changed to 'no resources' or 'on hold'.

- The info icons that drop on the left of the screen are good but there are a few issues
- firstly planet build message appear both on the correct turn and the next turn
- secondly they need to remain for a few extra turns so you can see what happened last turn or the turn before. I'd suggest shrinking them to half size and leaving them stacked under the current turn's icons. They can then slowly fade away over 5 turns or have 5 rows below for the previous 5 turns with mini stacked icons for any event types that happened. This could be setup or controlled from the option window to be how you like to play.
- Thirdly, what happens if you get too many messages in a single turn? I'd suggest stacking icons of the same type (replace them all with a single stacked icon). Clicking on it now brings a drop down menu for you to click on the actual event you want (with unviewed events highlighted)

Bug with the main map screen: borders in contested areas seem to have problems drawing correctly... Here I had just captured Sander II from the Arceans, and my side of the border got very screwed up.
